Welcome back to the weekly look at all things Penn State football recruiting here at Victory Bell Rings – the recruiting roundup.

As the 2017 college football season carries on, things continue to remain busy in the world of Penn State football recruiting. The Nittany Lions are coming off of a strong visitor weekend, especially considering they were hosting a lackluster opponent.

Furthermore, the Nittany Lions have made the top group for one four-star prospect while another is set to announce this month and the Nittany Lions are a finalist. So, let’s begin this week’s recruiting roundup, shall we?

Recapping the Indiana visitors

This past Saturday the Nittany Lions improved to 5-0 on the season with a 45-14 victory over the Indiana Hoosiers at Beaver Stadium. While it was not a huge recruiting weekend, partially due to the opponent being Indiana and partially due to Virginia Tech having a huge recruiting weekend within the Nittany Lions’ geographical footprint, it was still a big one for Penn State.

For starters, the Nittany Lions hosted seven commits on Saturday. Class of 2018 commits Charlie Katshir, Daniel George, Jesse Luketa, Judge Culpepper, Justin Shorter, and Will Levis were in town. As was their lone class of 2019 commit, Keaton Ellis.

This was the first time attending a game at Beaver Stadium for both Culpepper and Levis. Speaking of Culpepper, his high school teammate Will Putnam tagged along for the visit.

Putnam is a top-100 offensive lineman in the 2019 recruiting class. The Nittany Lions were one of the first power-five programs to offer Putnam. Originally an Illinois native, Putnam had previously visited the Nittany Lions this past spring while still living in Illinois.

There is a long way to go in this recruitment, but the Nittany Lions are in a great spot early on for Will Putnam. Having Judge Culpepper in his ear helps as well.

Another class of 2019 offensive line target on campus was four-star New Jersey native Caedan Wallace. The Princeton native attends Hun School which produced Fred Hansard in Penn State’s 2017 recruiting class. This was Wallace’s fourth visit to Penn State this calendar year, and him committing to Penn State appears to be a question of when and not if.

St. John’s College High School out of Washington D.C. also had a pair of players on hand this past Saturday. Class of 2019 running back Keilan Robinson and class of 2020 wide receiver Rakim Jarrett were on hand from the D.C. powerhouse. The Nittany Lions are in a great spot early on for Robinson

The Nittany Lions are in a great spot early on for Robinson. The three-star running back has been high on the Nittany Lions ever since earning an offer at a Penn State elite camp over the summer. As for Jarrett, he is a top-100 player in 2020 so the more often the Nittany Lions get him on campus the better.

Top-100 class of 2019 safety Lewis Cine also took in his first ever game at Beaver Stadium this past Saturday. Cine was offered by the Nittany Lions in early August, and also holds offers from Michigan, Notre Dame, and Wisconsin, among others. The Nittany Lions will be a big time player here.

Other notable visitors included four-star class of 2019 offensive lineman Darrian Dalcourt, three-star class of 2019 wide receiver John Metchie, and three-star legacy class of 2019 tight end Hayden Rucci. Rucci, unlike Dalcourt and Methcie, does not hold a Penn State offer.

Penn State makes the cut for four-star wide receiver

Four-star class of 2019 wide receiver Kendrell Scurry released a top-five of Twitter earlier this week. Not only did the Nittany Lions make the cut, but they checked in as the speedsters top school.

Scurry was offered by James Franklin and the Nittany Lion coaching staff back in May. However, he has yet to visit Happy Valley. The next step for Scurry and the Nittany Lions will be getting on campus for a visit.

Four-star defensive target set to announce

Four-star safety Kwantel Raines will announce his college decision on October 30.

For a few months now Raines has had a top four of Florida, Penn State, Pitt, and West Virginia. However, it appears his decision will be between his hometown Panthers and the Mountaineers of West Virginia.

Raines has been a frequent visitor in Happy Valley for a calendar year now. His latest visit to Penn State came for the Nittany Lions’ 33-14 victory over Pitt back in September. However, it is hard to imagine Penn State currently having room for Raines.

If the Nittany Lions were to suffer a de-commitment from a defensive back or miss out on multiple of their top remaining targets, both of which seem extremely unlikely, then the staff may circle back to Raines. Otherwise, there is no room at the inn.
