Penn State Football Recruiting Roundup: September 6, 2017
By Marty Leap
Welcome back to the weekly look at all things Penn State football recruiting here at Victory Bell Rings – the Penn State football recruiting roundup
The 2017 Penn State football season is under way and it could not be off to a better start. After a 52-0 walloping of Akron this past Saturday, the Nittany Lions are set to host in-state rival Pitt this weekend. As you will read more about below, the Nittany Lions’ blowout victory over the Zips came in front of a small group of visitors this past weekend.
With the Panthers coming to town, it will be a big recruiting weekend in Happy Valley. It will be the first of multiple big recruiting weekends this season, and that is something we will begin to touch on this week.
Visitors this past weekend
With Akron in town this past weekend the Nittany Lions hosted a small group of visitors. This group mostly consisted of class of 2018 commits. However, there was one class of 2019 visitor.
Five class of 2018 commits were in attendance to watch Penn State romp Akron over the weekend. These five commits were Jesse Luketa, Justin Shorter, Pat Freiermuth, PJ Mustipher, and Zack Kuntz.
The class of 2019 visitor in attendance this past Saturday was three-star cornerback Keaton Ellis. This was the State College natives second visit to Happy Valley in as many weeks. Furthermore, Ellis is expected to visit again this weekend.
Keaton Ellis committing to Penn State seems to be a question of when not if. There is a good chance this could come before the end of football season and that Ellis may end up the first commit in Penn State’s 2019 recruiting class.
Future visitors
As the season rolls on the visits to Happy Valley for games will rev up. So far, there are two un-committed recruits who have already set their official visits to Penn State. These two players are wide receiver Solomon Enis and defensive end Jayson Oweh.
Solomon Enis will be an official visitor when Penn State hosts Indiana at the end of the month. He is the son of former Penn State All-American running back Curtis Enis.
Right now, the Nittany Lions probably lead for Enis. The problem is, he is not at the top of their board. There is almost no way Enis would be a take for Penn State any sooner than January. And even then the Nittany Lions would have to miss on multiple targets for Enis to have a spot.
As for Jayson Oweh, his official visit will come when the Nittany Lions host Nebraska on November 18.
Unlike Solomon Enis, Jayson Oweh is very much so a take right now. The Nittany Lions still want to add another defensive end in this class and Oweh is arguably their top defensive end target. Oweh plans to announce his college decision at the Under Armor All-American Game on January 4. This appears to be a two-horse race between the Nittany Lions and Ohio State Buckeyes and entering official visit season Penn State appears to hold a slim lead.
Speaking of the Under Armor All-American Game…
…Looking way too far ahead to the Under Armor All-American Game
On January 4 the 2018 Under Armor All-American Game will be played in Orlando. Last week, defensive tackle commit PJ Mustipher committed to playing in this game. He will join fellow Penn State commits Justin Shorter and Ricky Slade in this game.
To go along with Jayson Oweh announcing his commitment at this game so will fellow defensive end Tyreke Smith. Smith hails from Cleveland and has a top two of Ohio State and Penn State. The Buckeyes will be very difficult to beat here, however, Smith has visited Penn State countless times in the past calendar year. The Nittany Lions should also get an official visit this fall. If anyone can beat the Buckeyes for Smith, it is the Nittany Lion.
