4. Chuck Fusina

The 1970s were kind to Penn State football’s air attack. The Lions featured two separate quarterbacks in the top five and three-year starter Chuck Fusina is the first one featured at four. A lot of signal callers usually didn’t get to see the field as early as Fusina did back in the 70s.

Luckily for Penn State football, Fusina found his way onto the field early setting up a brilliant two-year finish. Fusina posted a 22-2, two-year record and two top five finishes in 1977 and 1978. Just like his 70s counterpart, Fusina put up ahead-of-his-time numbers in his career.

He averaged at least 7.5 yards per attempt while throwing for 5,342 yards, 37 touchdowns against 31 interceptions in three years. Those numbers may not look unbelievable but to keep the touchdowns higher than interceptions for his career is still quite an accomplishment for the time.

Fusina also led the Nittany Lions to a Fiesta Bowl win in ’77 and almost led them to a national championship in ’78. Penn State recorded a perfect 11-0 regular season and a No. 1 ranking. The flawless season earned a matchup with Bear Bryant and No. 2 Alabama. A valiant effort fell short, as the Bear wouldn’t be denied taking his fifth national title 14-7.

Again, national titles were not the end all be all criteria, but his win-loss record and career numbers rank fourth on this list. His film showed an accurate passer with underrated mobility making him a headache for defenses.
