Penn State season opener with Akron set for noon kickoff

When is the official start of Penn State’s 2017 season?

The first kickoff announcement of the 2017 season for Penn State is now official. The Nittany Lions will host the Akron Zips on September 2 in a game that will kickoff at noon. That will be the first chance for fans to see the newest version of the Nittany Lions as they look to build on last season’s success.

Fresh off a Big Ten title and an appearance in the Rose Bowl, there are some high expectations in Happy Valley. Quarterback Trace McSorley, running back Saquon Barkley, and a host of other weapons will return to lead what should once again be one of the most prolific offenses in the country.

The defense, although missing some key players up front, should once again be solid, especially with a deep and talented secondary.

Akron will represent the first of seven home games in 2017 for the Nittany Lions. One of the most anticipated will come a week later on September when in-state rival Pitt heads to Beaver Stadium.

Penn State has an overall record of 5-0 against Akron. The last meeting between the two schools came in 2014. The Nittany Lions won 21-3 in what was James Franklin’s first game in Beaver Stadium as the Penn State head coach.

The game will be televised live on ABC.
