Sophomore linebacker Cam Brown is one to keep an eye on during Saturday’s Blue-White game.

To say Penn State endured injury problems at the linebacker position last year would be a major understated. At one point in the season the Nittany Lions were down all three starters, as well as some key reserves. The positive that came out of that was the fact that some younger guys gained valuable experience. Cam Brown saw significant action as a true freshman in 2016 and is now one to watch during the upcoming Blue-White game and throughout the new season.

Brown has already had a strong spring and has really impressed his teammates with his ability to pass rush. According to Andrew Callahan of Lions247, other linebackers have noticed what Brown has been able to do so far. “I really like watching Cam play because he’s so big and his stature is so rare and unique that when you see him make plays on certain things,” fellow linebacker Koa Farmer said.

When injuries started to riddle the linebacking unit last year Brown was thrust into early action. He ended up appearing in 13 of Penn State’s 14 games and made two starts against Minnesota and Maryland. He finished the year with 33 total tackles, including a career-high 10 against Michigan.

Standing at six-foot-five, Brown can be a menacing figure in the middle of the defense. He’s currently listed at 215 pounds though, meaning he could still stand to add some bulk to his frame. Still, his size and athleticism make him a very intriguing option for the Nittany Lions at linebacker.

Brown enters the new season as the backup to Manny Bowen at Will linebacker, but should still see significant playing time in his second year with the Nittany Lions.

The sophomore should play a prominent role during the Blue-White game, as head coach James Franklin wants to focus on the first and second units during the scrimmage. Look for him to continue his strong spring and don’t be surprised if he’s one of Saturday’s top performers.
