Penn State Football Recruiting Roundup: April 13, 2017
By Marty Leap
Welcome back to the weekly Penn State football recruiting roundup
The spring time is a very busy time in the world of Penn State football recruiting. This past week has been one of the busiest yet in Happy Valley.
During the past week, the Nittany Lions have hosted a slew of recruiting targets. This includes some recruits toward the top of James Franklin and company’s recruiting board. And all of this comes despite the biggest recruiting weekend of the spring, Blue-White weekend, still being a week away.
Top DT Target Back On Campus
This past weekend the Nittany Lion coaching staff hosted arguably their top defensive tackle target for the 2018 recruiting cycle in PJ Mustipher. This was the Owing Mills, Maryland, native’s first visit to Happy Valley since September.
Mustipher is a top-100 overall recruit in the country, and one of the nation’s top defensive tackles. He has also visited Maryland, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Tennessee so far this spring. And he might be ready to make a decision before the start of the summer.
Right now the Nittany Lions are firmly in Mustipher’s top group. Maryland, Ohio State, and Notre Dame, where his brother is the team’s starting center, are also among his favorites.
Penn State’s 2018 recruiting class does not have a true defensive tackle commit yet, but remember Nick Tarburton *could* end up at defensive tackle. The coaching staff would love for that first defensive tackle commit to be PJ Mustipher, and that is very possible.
Legacy Linebacker Picks Up An Offer
Temecula, California, native Jack Lamb visited Penn State this past weekend. While on the visit, the four-star linebacker picked up an offer from the Nittany Lions.
Both of Lamb’s parents are Penn State graduates. In fact, he is named after legendary Nittany Lion linebacker, and current radio announcer, Jack Hamm. With the offer, the Nittany Lions probably became the team to beat for Lamb.
James Franklin and company would plan to take at least one more linebacker in their 2018 recruiting class. It looks as if there is a very good chance that Jack Lamb ends up being that linebacker.
Florida DT Makes It To Campus
Florida native Judge Culpepper was also on campus this past weekend. This was the defensive tackle’s first visit to campus since the Nittany Lions extended a scholarship offer to Culpepper back in February.
Culpepper will be a very tough pull for the Nittany Lions. Not only is there a huge distance factor, his dad is an ex-Florida Gator. For these reasons, the Gators will be very difficult for any team to beat.
However, getting him on campus for a visit, especially an unofficial one the family has to pay for, is a good first step. It also shows that there is legit interest on his end.
Top Defensive Target Back On Campus
On Wednesday, Penn State hosted their top remaining defensive target in the 2018 recruiting cycle. This player is four-star safety Isheem Young. This is already Young’s third visit to Happy Valley this spring.
Young is a Philadelphia native and plays for state powerhouse Imhotep Charter. According to 247 Sports, Young is the 63rd best player in the country in the 2018 recruiting cycle.
The Nittany Lions find themselves battling Clemson, Florida State, and Ohio State, among others, for the services of Isheem Young. However, the Nittany Lions appear to be the clear cut leaders for Young as of now.
Isheem Young plans to announce his college decision before the start of his senior season in the fall.
