The Top Five All-Time Penn State Running Backs
By Shane Lunnen
Larry Johnson
No Penn State running back has more yards in a single season than Larry Johnson, and he’s the only one to top 2000 yards in one season.
During Johnson’s senior season in 2002, he amassed 2,087 yards and 20 touchdowns. He was the ninth player to in Division I-A history to join the 2,000-yard club and the first in the history of the Big Ten conference. That season he broke the single game rushing record three times, with his 327 yards against Indiana topping that list. He finished third in the Heisman voting, but won the Doak Walker, Walter Camp, and Maxwell awards.
Johnson turned in a very successful senior season in Happy Valley and was a first-round draft pick in 2003.
