The Penn State Nittany Lions moved to 2-0 under head coach James Franklin with a 21-3 home victory over the Akron Zips. This game was a struggle for the first three quarters as Penn State was plagued by mistakes and inconsistent play. However, there were also a lot of things that went right, especially late in the game.

Quarterback Christian Hackenberg continued to rack up the passing yards and showed that he’s clearly the leader of the offensive unit. Hackenberg had an up-and-down game and threw for three touchdowns, but also had two interceptions. The running game failed to get much going against the Zips, producing just over 100 yards of rushing yards.

On defense, the Nittany Lions gave up chunks of yards, but locked down when it was important in the red zone.

Much like last week, head coach James Franklin will likely see a lot of things on film that need to be corrected when he watches the tape of this game.

In this week’s installment of a VBR weekly series, we have assigned grades to each Penn State position group. Feel free to chime in with any and all of your agreements and disagreements!
