The black and gold of the Iowa Hawkeyes is timeless. The home jerseys are primarily black with white numerals. Gold and white stripes grace the sleeves. The away jersey is a mirror of the home one; primarily white with black numerals and gold stripes along the sleeves.
The iconic Tiger hawk which adorns the Iowa helmet is a more recent addition to the Hawkeyes repertoire. It was legendary Iowa head coach Hayden Fry who helped to create the logo. No matter what team you root for, you know the Hawkeye logo anywhere, and its original.
It was Fry who challenged his team and the school in order to be winners, they first had to dress like winners. Fry approached the Pittsburgh Steelers, the dominant team of the late 1970s about revamping the schools uniform in the image of the Steelers. The move paid off as the Hawkeyes were nearly bowl eligible every year in the decade of the 1980s.
