With some 144 days until the NIT Champions tip off, its a day full of news for the Nittany Lion squad and who they will be playing in their OOC. Some news is older like the Charleston Classic including the Nittany Lions, but for those of you who dont see the college basketball season as never ending here is an up to date list of the Lions OOC as of today.
- Season Opener: 11/13/09 against Penn (Friday of Indiana football game)
- @ Virgina for the ACC Challenge
- Charleston Classic: The second annual Charleston Classic, a bracket-format tournament, will feature 12 games in three days, Nov. 19-22. Each team will compete in one game per day, with the two teams that remain undefeated facing off in a championship match Sunday, Nov. 22. The second annual Charleston Classic will be held Nov. 19-22 in Charleston, S.C. Four of the teams in the field played in the 2008-09 NIT, including NIT champion Penn State, Davidson, Miami and South Carolina. The Charleston Classic was the first event held at the brand-new Carolina First Arena at the College of Charleston. Last year, attendance for the six sessions was 12,620, an average of 2,103 per session. This is a huge step up from last years Philly Hoops Classic considering that the team was banking on playing Nova until losing to RI in the second round.
- Gardner Webb – also playing North Carolina, Texas, and Charlotte.
- @ Temple
- Virgina Tech @ home
- Siena and/or American (both rumored) might be included.

So in total this season OCC so far is much better than previous years. With room for 3 more games there isn’t tons of room for Ed to get a game against a real soft team. It seems as though he is really trying hard to help the RPI this year after it being maybe the sole reason behind the Lions missing the NCAA bid. If this falls into place and the Lions pick up good wins they could be sitting in a good position come Big Ten season.
For those of you on Ed for Gardner-Webb, in order to improve RPI it doesnt take wins against teams like Pitt and Louisville (although that would help) it takes wins against teams that are in the top 150 or so in RPI. Even UNC plays cupcakes, all in all this is the best OCC that Ed has put together, with 4 spots left there is room to make it even better. That being said the addition of teams like Cincinnati or Vermont would keep it about level.
For those of you who dont like clicking links, heres the basic rundown that the Charleston Classic field has to offer.
The first major upside is that the teams just dont suck as much as the Philly Classic ones. Besides the point that the team wanted to play Nova, the dropoff in the CC isn’t nearly as bad as it was in the PHC. The average RPI works out to be 148.2 for the CC, and 187.4 for the PHC.

"Penn State’s nine guaranteed non-conference opponents will bring an average RPI of 134, that is better than 80 RPI points lower than the average of last seasons 13 non-conference opponents entering the season."
