It’s been over 5 hours now since the final Letter of Intent, from Florida DB Neiko Robinson rolled off the fax machine on what was a rather mundane National Signing Day for Bill O’Brien and Penn State. With the majority of Penn State’s NCAA mandated 15 scholarships spoken for over a month ago, no “soft commitments”, and no Signing Day announcements, the Penn State coaches, and fans, were left to simply wait for the 12 expected players to submit their paperwork to PSU. All American DE Garrett Sickels out of New Jersey wasted no time this morning, becoming the first recruit to fax his Letter in at 7:04, and everyone but Robinson had sent their LOI in by 9:45, including top quarterback recruit Christian Hackenberg, who signed shortly before 9:00.

So the question remains, how did the Lions do? If recruiting service rankings are your thing, “mixed bag” might be the best way to describe it. Both 247Sports and ESPN ranked the PSU class in the top 25, and 4th in the Big 10. Scout and Rivals were a little more stingy, with the former putting the Lions at 45th nationally and 7th in the Big 10, while the latter had them 41st and 5th. There are inherent issues with those ranking systems, however. The more players you sign, the higher you are ranked, teams have different needs, and typically a QB is going to get you more “points” than a defensive tackle.

From a realistic standpoint, it seems pretty hard to find much fault with Penn State’s class. Obviously the sanctions put O’Brien and his staff behind the 8 ball, and there were a number of high profile recruits that likely would have improved those rankings that backed out in the aftermath. There are also several players we know had an interest in PSU, but opted to look elsewhere even before committing after the sanctions were announced. We can only guess about how many other players we don’t know about felt the same way.

But enough negativity. There is so much to look forward to with the 17 young men who have joined the program. Four defensive backs (Kasey Gaines, Jordan Smith, Anthony Smith, Neiko Robinson) address the biggest need on the depth chart. Christian Hackenberg fills a huge need at quarterback. Adam Breneman is exactly the type of tight end you would want to plug into O’Brien’s offense. Gaines, Robinsin, along with Parker Cotrhen represent Penn State’s first significant foray into the talent rich south, something that should continue to pay dividends down the road. Brandon Bell and Zayd Issah are two players PSU targeted early on to fill the holes at linebacker, and they got both. Sickels and Curtis Cothran are intriguing prospects at defensive end, and again, players PSU wanted and got.

One aspect I think can’t be under estimated is how big getting a few high profile players like Hackenberg, Breneman, Sickels, Mahon in this class is. Not only have you brought in 4 key players, but you have 4 guys that already bleed blue and white, and have shown it’s still “OK” for elite players to not only consider, but attend Penn State. Bill O’Brien said as much during his press conference today, saying keeping those kids in the fold was big for not only 2013, but also the class of 2014.

In the coming seasons we’ll see just how good this class of 17 players really is, but as has been said ad nauseum, every player deserves a ton of credit for seeing through the storm clouds and sanctions, and still signing with the Lions. This class will bear a significant brunt of the sanctions, and all should be commended for their commitment to PSU.

While I can’t particularly remember the date that Neiko committed, I will undoubtedly remember the buzz that day. “Penn State got a recruit from Florida?!?!” The first Florida recruit that most of us can remember has faxed his letter of intent to Bill O’Brien and the Nittany Lions. And Neiko isn’t just another Florida guy, he was named to the Florida Class 1A First Team, despite missing the early part of the season.

Neiko had a roller-coaster of a senior season. After serving a suspension for an on-field altercation, he ended the season with a state championship. His recruitment ride was similar. After being offered in early June, he committed just a few days later, despite never having visited Penn State. During the season, Neiko grew anxious because the PSU coaches wanted him to wait until after the season to take his official visit. He was offered by Minnesota and even took an official with the Gophers in October. In the end, the staff just wanted Robinson to come on a less hectic weekend when he could get some more individual attention and get a better feel for the campus.

Robinson visited Penn State in mid-January and said that it was everything he had hoped and more.

The consensus three star safety is of the hard-hitting variety. His highlight reel is full of big hits. He also shows good enough ball skills and plenty of speed. Some defensive backs enter college with at least a possibility of playing wide receiver at some point. I don’t think that’s the case with Neiko, as he seems to enjoy hitting too much.

The Penn State secondary is thin and both starting safeties will be seniors. If Neiko Robinson doesn’t see the field at some point this year, he almost certainly will in 2014, maybe even as a starter.

One of the more dramatic recruiting stories of the season for Penn State fans has come to a happy ending, as Harrisburg, PA LB Zayd Issah has faxed his letter of intent to Penn State. Issah is a 3 star OLB prospect out of the well known Central Dauphin program.

Zayd committed to PSU at the end of June following an unofficial visit to campus, but backed out in August, in part due to the NCAA sanctions. At the time, Issah indicated he wanted to take a step back, and make sure he was 100% sure of his decision. He was very clear that Penn State was still very much in the picture, despite backing out. Following an unofficial visit for the Ohio State game, and then an official trip to Happy Valley in early December with a number of prospects, Zayd recommitted to Penn State.

Issah is ranked as a 3-star player at 247, projected as an OLB/Athlete. Typically that “athlete” term ends up being applied to players that don’t seem to have a home, while Issah is a virtual lock to play at one of the outside linebacker spots. With that said, he could be the most athletic player in the class, something that could help him see the field either at linebacker, where plenty of playing time is up for grabs, or on special teams.

Penn State made a concerted effort for the first time in years to recruit the south, and it has already begun to show results, with 3 of PSU’s 17 commitments hailing from the talent rich region. Alabama DT Parker Cothren is one of those, and he has faxed his Letter of Intent to the PSU coaching staff. Parker is a 3-star player on 247.

Parker had originally committed to Purdue over the summer, but backed out following an offer from Penn State, and a subsequent visit. A relative unknown at the time, Parker quickly became one of the hotter prospects in Alabama, picking up offers from Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, and Auburn in a 6 day period in January. Despite the intense interest from the SEC, Coach Johnson did a solid job keeping Parker in the fold.

Going into the 2013 season, I would not be surprised to see Cothren work his way into the defensive line rotation. Larry Johnson has never been shy about playing freshman if they are ready, and the limited depth at tackle means there is plenty of opportunity should he show he is ready. And let’s be honest, how excited are you to see Parker Cothren line up next to Curtis Cothran on the same defensive line?

The fax machine inside the Lasch Football Building has been getting a workout this morning, and Tanner Hartman, a 3-star line prospect from Lynchburg, VA, became the latest to send in his Letter of Intent. Tanner had offers from Maryland and Temple. 247 ranked him as an OL/DL prospect, but it is thought he will likely end up on the offensive line for the Nittany Lions. Tanner was high on Penn State throughout the summer, but committed to Maryland after not getting the offer he wanted from the Lions. Following the decommitment of Dorian Johnson, PSU wasted little time in offering Hartman, and he quickly accepted.

Tanner is listed at 6’4″, 255 lbs., but will likely be adding some weight quickly if he ends up on the offensive line as expected. I can hear Coach Fitz licking his chops already. With that in mind, it would be a shock to see Tanner play this season, as a redshirt year seems to be a lock. Down the road, my instinct says you can expect to see Hartman lining up at tackle, with his athleticism. The key will be retaining that quickness as he adds weight to play on the offensive side of the ball.

The commitment to recruiting the southern United States has officially paid off, as Georgia DB Kasey Gaines has signed his Letter of Intent, becoming the newest member of the Penn State Class of 2013. Kasey is ranked as a 3-star prospect on 247, and was also considering Harvard, Miami (OH) and VMI before signing with the Nittany Lions. Former defensive coordinator Ted Roof, whose Georgia roots run deep, lead the effort in recruiting Kasey, and even after he left for Georgia Tech, Kasey remained solid in his commitment to Penn State.

While the other three defensive backs in this signing class (Jordan Smith, Anthony Smith, Neiko Robinson) could initially split their time between safety and cornerback, Kasey is a virtual lock to play at safety. With the limited depth in the secondary we have discussed ad nauseum around here, Kasey could earn playing time as a true freshman, especially if injuries become an issue.

My feeling is that a redshirt year would likely benefit both player and program though, as there are returning players at both safety spots, and some limited depth behind them with players who have a year in the program. Kasey is obviously a bright kid, as evidenced by the opportunity to attend Harvard, but is a better athlete than he gets credit for. This is much more than just a depth signing. I fully expect Kasey to make an impact at PSU early in his career, whether it’s this year or in 2014.

Virginia WR DaeSean Hamilton is the latest Penn State to officially join the fold, as his signed letter of intent has been faxed in. Hamilton committed to the Lions in early December, following the big official visit weekend that saw 3 other visitors join the class (although Jonathan Walton eventually decommitted). He is a 3-star receiver on 247, and the 14th best player out of talent rich Virginia. DaeSean held numerous offers, but chose PSU primarily over Illinois, Miami, Virginia Tech, and Michigan State.

With pressing needs elsewhere on the roster, and limited scholarships, wide receiver was not a focus of the class, and the staff was picky in who they targeted. DaeSean was definitely a top choice, and his commitment in December was seen as a major victory on the recruiting trail.

The wide receiver depth chart is full of returning talent, with the likes of Allen Robinson and Brandon Moseby-Felder returning, and 2012 prized recruit Eugene Lewis entering the fold after redshirting last season. Alex Kenney and Trevor Williams will provide solid depth, making a redshirt the likely path for DaeSean. A year with Fitz, not to mention learning the college game from a guy like Robinson will only pay dividends down the road.

Linebacker U added its newest member recently as New Jersey product Brandon Bell faxed his letter of intent into Happy Valley. After verbally committing in mid-June, Bell stayed faithful to his word through the NCAA shenanigans and has not been shy about his eagerness to play for linebacker factory that LB coach Ron Vanderlinden has become.

At 6’1″ 220 pounds, Bell has good size and should grown into a solid middle linebacker. He’s a unanimous three star linebacker, according to the experts and Scout calls him the 17th best middle linebacker prospect in this class. Brandon had 117 tackles as a junior, including 24 for loss to go along with over 400 rushing yards and five touchdowns and followed it up with an equally strong senior year. While soft-spoken off the field, Bell brings the wood on it, as you can see in the video below.

Along with Penn State, Brandon held offers from the usual east coast suspects (Rutgers, Cuse, UConn, Maryland, etc.) as well as West Virginia, Northwestern and UCF. He visited West Virginia last winter but hasn’t been to any other campus but Penn State since then. He attended games against Ohio and Wisconsin before taking his official on December 7th.

Glenn Carson has the middle linebacker spot locked down for this coming year but with a thin linebacker corps, Bell could push for snaps. If not on defense, he’s a candidate for special teams. Still, it’s not difficult to think that Bell will be starting at MLB for Ron Vanderlinden in the near future.

Bill O’Brien has received a letter of intent from Hershey offensive tackle Andrew Nelson. When the 6’5″ 270 pound Nelson committed to Penn State last April, he was a bit of an unknown. At the time, he was an under-the-radar prospect who most fans (and some coaches) hadn’t yet heard of. After committing, Andrew dedicated himself to an offseason routine built to enhance his explosiveness and strength. As a result, Nelson is now a four star prospect, according to 247Sports and passed on offers from Missouri, Northwestern, Pitt and Maryland. If Nelson had not made it clear to other schools that Penn State was his dream school, his offer sheet would likely have tripled in size.

Andrew is a big, strong tackle who should find great success under the coaching of Mac McWhorter. He’ll redshirt in 2013 while adding weight to his massive frame, but look for him to push for time at right tackle in 2014 as a redshirt freshman. There are few other tackles on the roster with his natural ability. He’ll need to work on his pass-blocking technique but as a run blocker, he does an exceptional job of engaging the defender and staying with his block. His highlight reel is full of pancake blocks and the kids who do stay on their feet end up being pushed several yards away from the play. I think the Penn State staff found a real gem in Nelson. It won’t be long before he is guarding the blindside of a fellow classmate.

When I asked Andrew what time he would be sending his LOI into Penn State, he replied “As early as possible!”

Brendan Mahon is officially a Nittany Lion. The New Jersey offensive lineman held a small ceremony at his high school to sign his letter before faxing the paperwork to the Penn State coaching staff. Brendan is ranked as a 4-star player by 247, the 12th best offensive guard in the country, and the 10th best player in a very deep class out of the Garden State.

Brendan was 4th major commitment to Penn State last spring, joining classmates Adam Breneman, Garrett Sickels, and Christian Hackenberg as the core group of the class. Those 4 were of instrumental in recruiting other players to the class early on, and then rallying many of the other commits in July after the NCAA sanctions were announced to stick with Bill O’Brien and Penn State.

Looking forward to the 2013 season, it seems like a redshirt will be in Brendan’s future. Not only does PSU appear to have solid depth at the guard spot, most high school linemen benefit from the year to adjust to the college game, and build up their strength to deal with the bigger, faster and stronger defenders across the line. No one will benefit more from Fitz’ training program than these young offensive line recruits.

Newton, PA defensive end Curtis Cothran has faxed his letter of intent to the coaches at Penn State. Cothran is an unusual type of recruit. The only highlight reel you can find of him is a minute long. He committed to Penn State last March, a day after receiving his offer and he all but quit the recruiting process. Curtis knew Penn State was where he wanted to be and he didn’t care to make much fuss about it. Also, he’s 6’5″, 250 pounds and freakishly strong.

Cothran has reported offers including Northwestern, Maryland, UConn and Rutgers but I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that he has another half dozen offers that he just never told anybody about because they didn’t matter to him. That’s the kind of kid he is. In a world where recruits are taking secret visits and flipping commitments to rival schools, CC committed in March and stopped caring about the process. He’s a consensus three star but that’s tough to take seriously because he never tried to get recruited or send film to the recruiting services. I rarely ever fault a kid for whatever decision he makes about his future but with all the recruiting news from the past few days, it’s refreshing to reflect on a situation like Cothran’s.

As for on the field, Curtis might shock some people and push for snaps this coming season. He has bulked up and was a force at the Chesapeake Bowl all star game. If he doesn’t crack the depth chart this year, it won’t take much longer than that. I think Larry Johnson has his next star in the making in Curtis Cothran.

Early August 2012 wasn’t exactly full of great news for Penn State fans. There was still a smoldering crater from the Emmert Bomb (trademark pending), several high profile players had left the program, and national pundits were falling over each other to predict the end of Penn State football. Then something funny happened. Jordan Smith saw through the smoke, and became the first player of what would be the 2013 signing class to verbally commit to PSU.

OK, Jordan has enrolled already, and will count towards the 2012 numbers, but for all intents and purposes, he will forever be the first post sanction commit. Jordan’s coach told Scout.com back in August that he is a “high energy” and “adamant about academics and athletics”. Jordan told our Tim Tolley back in August that he has long been a PSU fan, in part due to his brother playing with both Derrick Williams and Navorro Bowman in high school. Jordan was something of an unknown at the time of his commitment, with ESPN ranking him as the 4th best prospect in Washington D.C., while Scout and 247 had not even ranked him. He now sits at 3-stars on 247 and 2-stars on Scout. He held 4 other FBS offers, Illinois, Colorado, Hawaii and Kansas, and picked PSU primarily over the Illini.

As we have mentioned a time or two, secondary depth has been a huge focus of this class. Jordan’s early enrollment will of course give him a leg up in a relatively wide open competition for playing time at both safety and cornerback.

National Signing Day is less than 48 hours away. Dozens of college coaches, and thousands (or more) of college football fans will be on the edge of their collective seat waiting to see where the nation’s top high school football players will be attending school. However, here in our Happy Valley, the day should be completely devoid of any drama. 17 players have committed to Penn State, with 5 of those already enrolled for the Spring semester. The other 12 will sign their LOIs on Wednesday, officially becoming members of the Nittany Lions Class of 2013. Here is a rundown of where PSU’s class stands going into the insanity of Wednesday. We will update this post throughout the week with links to our coverage of each player:

THE HEADLINERS

Given the circumstances surrounding the football program, this class will be remembered for much more than their accomplishments on the football field, whatever they may be. With that said, several of the players come to Penn State with resumes that have Nittany Lion fans excited. Here are a few players to keep your eyes on:

QB Christian Hackenberg - We could fill an entire post with Christian’s accomplishments during his prep days at Fork Union. Elite 11 Finalist and Under Armour All American are just the tip of the iceberg. Christian was the first elite player to commit to Bill O’Brien nearly a year ago, and started the run of early success for PSU on the recruiting trail. Hackenberg picked the Lions over Alabama, Florida, and South Carolina, among others, and is a 5-star prospect on 247 Sports.

DE Garrett Sickels - Garrett committed to Penn State shortly after Hackenberg’s verbal pledge last year, and like Christian, remained solid to PSU throughout the process, most especially in the aftermath of the NCAA sanctions, calling his commitment a “no brainer”. Sickels held numerous offers, including from Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and Ohio State, and is rated 4-stars on 247.

LB Zayd Issah – Zayd committed to Penn State in June of 2012, but backed out, in part due to the NCAA sanctions. At that time, he said he wanted to make sure he was 100% confident in his decision, and was clear PSU was still very much in the picture. After visiting Penn State on the weekend of December 7th, Zayd re-committed to the Lions, primarily over Oregon. Issah is a 3-star prospect on 247.

TE Adam Breneman – While the QB that will be throwing to Adam over the next few years ended up ranked higher, you will not get much argument from Penn State fans that Adam is the biggest name of this class. He wound up as the 2nd ranked TE prospect according to 247, despite not playing a single snap this season due to an ACL injury, and was the glue that held the heart of this class together during the peak of the storm over the summer. Adam is ranked a 4-star prospect on 247.

OG Brendan Mahon – Along with Breneman, Sickels, and Hackenberg, Brendan Mahon was a part of the core group that initially became additional recruiters for PSU, and then keeping the class together over the summer. Mahon is a 3-star prospect on 247, and chose the Lions over offers from Florida, Rutgers and Michigan.

When asked about life’s certainties, death and taxes are the two that get thrown out. I would submit, however, that Penn State football’s legacy recruiting as well as their success in Maryland might be right up there. Those two combined in late October when Richy Anderson decommitted from the University of Maryland, and flipped to his father’s alma mater, Penn State.

Richy’s dad, Richie Sr., was a powerful fullback for Joe Paterno’s teams from 1989-1992, and then went on to have a very successful 12 year NFL career with Cowboys and Jets, earning two Pro Bowl selections. His son does not have his size (5’11″, 180 lbs.), but has the speed and athleticism to more than make up for it. The younger Anderson is not only here for his name either. In addition to the Maryland, he had offers from Wake Forest, Rutgers and East Carolina, Temple, and Boston College. All 3 major scouting services ranked him at 3 stars as well.

Where does Richy fit in? Off the bat, a redshirt does not seem out of the question, given the depth at tailback, as well as the multitude of options at the slot receiver position. However, he has enrolled early, and with O’Brien and the rest of the staff not shy about playing the best players, regardless of age, don’t be surprised if Anderson does make his way into the fold for the 2013 season.

A combination of disciplinary action, transfers and injuries decimated the already limited depth in the Penn State secondary going into the 2012 season, making replenishing the cupboard a top priority for Bill O’Brien and his staff with the 2013 recruiting class. In all, 4 recruits of the 17 that make up the 2013 class are projected at either cornerback or safety, including today’s subject, Anthony Smith.

Anthony committed to Penn State following his official visit in early December, along with Zayd Issah, DaeSean Hamilton, and the since decommitted Jonathan Walton. He played this past season at the Valley Forge Military Academy after finishing his high school career in New Jersey. Smith could be considered the ultimate unknown, with his only other FBS offer from the newly promoted UMass. However, Smith’s extra year in prep school, plus his early enrollment make him an intriguing prospect to watch in the secondary going forward, with plenty of playing time up for grabs.

As of now, Smith begins his career at CB, but his size (6’0″, 185 lbs) makes me think you can expect him to finally settle in at safety, especially now that Coach Fitz has his hands on him. Whether it is at CB, or safety, Anthony’s early enrollment has me expecting to see him on the field in the fall when PSU kicks off the 2013 season against Syracuse.

National Signing Day (yes, it’s a holiday, and yes I’m capitalizing it) comes up on Wednesday, and for Penn State fans, it will almost certainly be a fulfilling day, if not anti climatic. The Lions class is set, and all the names you have come to know and love over really, the past 12 months, will be the ones sending in their LOI’s starting bright and early. However, PSU has enrolled 5 players early, and leading up to the big day, VBR will be recapping those players. And what better place to start than the one of this classes headliners, TE Adam Breneman.

If Adam wasn’t the most important player Bill O’Brien targeted after his hiring over a year ago, he was right up there. O’Brien made recruiting Pennsylvania the unquestioned focus for his staff, and Breneman was one of the top players in a very deep class in the Keystone State. Combine all of that with the emphasis placed on the tight end position in BOB’s offense, and you see the importance. Adam committed early in the process as well, shortly after fellow blue chipper Christian Hackenberg, giving PSU plenty of early momentum.

Adam missed the 2012 season due to an ACL injury suffered in a summer camp, but still earned All American Honors, and lofty recruiting rankings from every service out there. Instead of focusing just on his rehab, Breneman put together Catch the Cure, a fundraising effort to ultimately end ALS, which has hit close to home with Tom Kirchoff a former Cedar Cliff quarterback diagnosed with the disease. Over the course of just a few months, Catch the Cure raised over $100,000 towards ALS awareness and research.

Adam’s knee injury makes a redshirt in the 2013 season a strong possibility (not to mention the emergence of Kyle Carter, Jesse James, and Matt Lehman), but even in the highly unlikely event he never catches a pass for the Lions, Adam Breneman will be a name held in high regard by PSU fans for years to come.
