I was going to title this post “Does PSU Football Have Too Much Power” and then let you know I changed my dentist and dramatize it to the fact I will have no teeth in 3 months, but I’m not Sports Illustrated, so I didn’t.

As you should have heard, it got pretty testy on the teleconference this week. Ben Jones of StateCcollege.com has linked it and it’s pure gold from start to finish. Needless to say, Evil Bill is simply fuming. Since January 2012, the Head Football Coach has been nothing but great for Penn State. After last July, that role expanded into a Public Relations role and was also handled with fire, grace and class. The season came and ended with what everyone assumed was an F Bomb. That has since been clarified that the wind caused the sound to go awry like a bad kick (I know, most kicks are bad). There has been a debate on the “fighters” comment and what was said, so in saying that, this in-“fighting” is absurd.

Penn State has just finished the 1st year of the sanctions and the program is doing well all things considered. The foundation was there and graduation rates remained strong despite the toxic culture the NCAA portrayed. Recruiting is going well and while there will could possibly be bumpy roads ahead (probably not), the football program is in very capable hands. VBR has already taken aim at this very subject, but now it’s my turn. The undermining of the football program and the Athletics Department is ridiculous, but allow me address some of the names that keep showing up in this pissing match:

Bill O’Brien – Head Football Coach: Generally referred to as the greatest coach in college football (by me and anyone with a brain). The head football coach who also moonlights as the public relations department by always being available and honest has been the face of Penn State since last January. There is also a general respect for the chain of command, a sense of accountability and honesty which is a rarity in these times. Not part of the pissing match, but a responder to it.

Dave Joyner: While I understand that there is animosity towards the former Board of Trustees (BOT) member, he’s not here for long so the attempt to take him down has only made PSU look worse, which is a common theme. If the medical change by him was a personal grudge then that’s a bad look. I have to give him some credit, as small as it may be, on the football coach hire. Did he deserve the job? No, but he got it and I am not sure who else was even a candidate.

Rod Erickson: I would someday wish to be in a high stakes poker game with Erickson because I would get that guy to fold just by staring at him. That is all I have to say about him. He’ll be gone soon enough.

Jay Paterno: Even mentioning a Paterno is risky. They’re the 1st family of State College and beloved by many. Jay consistently carries himself with class and is a great ambassador for the University. Jay constantly tweets about all PSU sports but never tweets about football and that’s part of my beef. The CBS article came off as quite dismissive and petty. Jay seemed to cite that the B1G had a down year and that was bush league. It was a bush league question from Dodd and Jay mentioned he doesn’t think its right to critique the coach, but he still got in a shot and mentioned how good Urban Meyer was, which made no sense. Maybe I am forgetting that the 2011 Temple team that was the 1985 Bears D, but 14 points? Spare me the “down year” stuff. I am not sure McGloin just signed a 3 year deal thanks to a down league. Jay also realized that message boards had accused him of being the source of the Sports Illustrated story and quickly dismissed those rumors. There is no reason not to believe him so Godspeed Jay on whatever you plan on doing.

Anthony Lubrano: It seems to me Lubrano is a on the BOT for all the wrong reasons. He claims his best interest is Penn State but publicly questioning medical practices proves that to be untrue. I understand Joe was his pal, but as a member of the board, I ask what his biggest contribution is so far other than being the most quoted BOT member in history? To publicly comment and basically support that bogus Sports Illustrated article makes me wonder what the end goal of Lubrano is? Remember, Lubrano was also upset that the football coach was consulted about the NCAA’s sanctions before they were handed down. As we can all agree, the sanctions suck, but again, he’s out of line. His role on the BOT seems more like an overzealous parent on a high school board than it does for the best interest of Penn State. I am not naïve to not know what he wants, but slowly we’re getting to the point of cutting off the nose to spite the face.

Wayne Sebastianelli: A major subject in the Sports Illustrated article has been oddly quiet since the story ran. While you cannot deny the good he has done, most notably with Adam Taliaferro, he’s still an employee of PSU. It also is a good time to remind people that jobs in Centre County don’t last forever. If football loses 9 games a year for 3 straight years (not on this watch) then I am pretty sure the office would be ordered to clean out.

John Ziegler: A lightning rod for controversy it seems within the Penn State twitterverse . There is no detail of the last 18 months or so he is not aware of, but his abrasive style has done nothing to improve the image of Penn State. His followers attack anyone who seems to disagree with him. He also did about the dumbest thing you could ever do, take some jabs at the football genius tweeting ESPN helped him get his job by some bizarre logic and complaining ESPN gave a free pass after the “fighters” comment. Regardless, this latest annoyance wasn’t his doing, but I wanted to address those cheap shots.

Other PSU coaches: Currently, Penn State may have their best set of coaches at any time in the history of the school. Wrestling is better than ever, Women’s Basketball is doing great, Men’s and Women’s Volleyball are always good, Hockey looks promising and I believe Chambers is up for the task of changing the perception of the Men’s Basketball program. They don’t need this crap either.

Since that SI article has ran, Garret Learner has spoken, Taliaferro tweeted that he supports this program, but for some unknown reason, other people within are trying to sabotage this. All that has happened is now people realize that Sports Illustrated tried to create a controversy over something that has been rebutted with statistics and additional facts. The other thing that has happened is people are realizing that people within Penn State are screwing with the football team and it’s that perception is the reality. People will blame the media for creating a new story, but it’s pretty plain to see this is no stretch. I have my theories and you can probably guess based on what I have written on who the source is to Sports Illustrated. I hope I’m wrong, but that is rarely the case.

Todd Blackledge said on twitter we can’t fully move forward until we know the truth and that is a common thought of many. If that’s your mindset, fine go right ahead, but let’s not undermine the program in doing that. Just understand that there is the reality of this that the truth they are seeking may never be known and also people with much more authority and legal backgrounds are working that out. Undercutting the football program to settle a score seems like an off track way of finding this truth. There is enough in our way and we surely don’t need this garbage.

The head football coach is a man who doesn’t suffer fools and sadly, he has plenty of fools to suffer.

I have tried my best to refrain from jumping into this fray. There are enough people out there with similar opinions and thoughts that have done a much better job articulating them than I ever would. But I have had it. This in-fighting and public sniping has gone too far, and if it does not stop, not only Penn State football, but Penn State University is going to lose good people trying to lead this school out of the wilderness. I honestly believe that Bill O’Brien, and his staff, who deserve all the credit they have received, and some, have had enough. Just listen to O’Brien’s conference call with the media earlier this week in the fallout from the Sports Illustrated story.

Nov 17, 2012; University Park, PA, USA; Penn State Nittany Lions head coach Bill O

Look no further than what happened at Michigan when Lloyd Carr retired and Rich Rodriguez took over. Yes, there were other underlying circumstances, and RichRod didn’t win, at all, but the chasm that divided the program went public, and crippled a program every bit as rich in history and tradition of Penn State. Remember “unnamed sources” tipping the media off to the now infamous practice habits. You do not have to work too hard to see some of the similarities.

Now, there are differences, of course. From all indications, there is no undercover revolt against O’Brien or his staff. No, it has instead focused on his bosses, notably AD David Joyner. I am no fan of Joyner, nor is much of the Penn State fan base. But, what exactly is gained by calling the man out, in a national publication, in what appears to be a glorified pissing match? Not only that, but Coach O’Brien was dragged into this mess, somewhat indirectly, by questioning the changes he suggested to the medical care within the football program. Changes that, as PSU has pointed out emphatically, are very much in line with what is done at other major college football programs.

I know this will come as a shock to many of you, but Joe Paterno’s way is not the only way to do things, even at Penn State. I do not think I can state emphatically enough that PSU football was in need of a fresh set of eyes, and fresh ideas, in practically every aspect of the program, not just in offensive strategy. And if a man like Bill O’Brien, who has worked with some of the most respected men in coaching, thinks it’s worth making a change, I’m sure as hell going to listen.

Now you have a trustee, who I imagine is more than capable of picking up the phone and getting a hold of the football coach, publicly questioning that coach. What exactly does that accomplish, other than pissing off that coach (and giving us some of the best audio ever)? While that is just one part of this, it feels entirely symptomatic of this political struggle going on at PSU. And it is not good for anyone.

Remember back in December and January when Bill O’Brien was very much under consideration for a number of NFL coaching jobs? This is a man that clearly has options, and is clearly not happy with what is going on. He’s also a man that has done more than anyone else to bring some semblance of hope and unity to Penn State. I doubt he expected that was what he was signing up for back in January of 2012, but it is what he got, and he has surpassed what any of us hoped for, and maybe what some of us deserve.

My plea is a simple one. Shut up. If you have a problem with something, bring it up with that person, behind closed doors, and away from a media all too eager to pile on. I have no doubts the support for O’Brien, his staff, and his team is unbelievably high. You would obviously be foolish to not feel that way. But this public politicking amongst his bosses and decision makers needs to stop. Now. Otherwise, we risk losing perhaps the best thing Penn State has going for it.

Just 4 months into his new gig as the head of the Nittany Lions football program, Bill O’Brien was barnstorming across Pennsylvania, East Coast media markets, and Penn State alumni hotbeds. He also went to Cleveland. At the time, it seemed like a great idea to get the new face of PSU football out in front of the most loyal of fans, and bring along some of the most successful coaches in the athletic department to trumpet the #OneTeam mantra. I was not able to make any of those gatherings, and won’t again this year, but one thing has been clear to me observing from afar. These events are much more than just a gimmick. These coaches genuinely like one another, and clearly enjoy these events, and working together.

One thing that always irked me in previous years was how the football program was really off on its own, content to fund the rest of the department. I look at some of the most successful athletic programs across the country, and there’s a real connection between the de facto head of those departments, the head football coach, and the men and women that run the other programs on those campuses.

I grew up in Columbus (you may make your own jokes here. I’ll wait….ok then), and there is a story that sticks with me that proves my point, I think. The men’s hockey program had a number of prospects in town for a recruiting visit, over a football weekend. After touring the practice rink, the players came outside, and saw a crowd of thousands lining the streets as the OSU band headed into the stadium, with raucous crowds. One of the recruits would later say that’s when he made his mind up where he was going to school. Seeing that much energy surrounding a football game, and the passion of Buckeye fans told him everything he needed to know. I look at Ohio State now, and see a football coach and basketball coach that find ways to work together for the betterment of the other. Florida had a similar atmosphere when Meyer was in Gainesville as well. I think Penn State has the beginnings of that with O’Brien and Pat Chambers’ very obvious friendship.

Now, Penn State has always used football weekends to bring in recruits for the other programs, and football recruits are often seen at home basketball games if there is one taking place on their recruiting visit. But it also feels more genuine now. I know this whole “One Team” marketing campaign draws more than a few laughs, but I also see these coaches working together to use the best aspects of their programs, and their individual talents, to help their colleagues. And in the end, that is going to pay huge dividends for ALL of the Nittany Lions teams.

What started out as an innocent message board rumor this morning has turned into reality. According to the Orlando Sentinel, Penn State will host Central Florida this coming season on September 14th in Beaver Stadium. Penn State will be traveling to Orlando in 2014 to play the Knights in Bright House Networks Stadium.

If the Sentinel has those dates accurate, the UCF will be replacing Virginia on the schedule in 2013, and UMass in 2014. It is worth mentioning that while the Sentinel mentions the September 14 date, the Bethune Cookman date apparently being rescheduled is September 21st. Neither school has confirmed any details.

Bill O’Brien has a long relationship with current UCF coach George O’Leary, coaching with him from 1995-2001 at Georgia Tech. O’Brien was also in line to go to Notre Dame with O’Leary, before that deal fell apart due to the well known resume padding.

O’Brien has also made no secret about wanting to offer both his players, and Penn State fans, the opportunity to play and travel around the country, despite the NCAA sanctioned bowl ban. While nothing has been confirmed, there have also been reports of PSU possibly going to Ireland to play Army. From a football standpoint, this offers O’Brien the opportunity to sell the chance to play a game close to home for many southern recruits, as the staff continues to push for more of a presence in the talent rich south going forward.

Bill O’Brien meets with the Penn State media later this morning for the first time since the end of the 2012 season, and more relevant, the circus of NFL rumors in the last week. Sunday morning brought a report from ESPN’s Chris Mortensen that O’Brien was on many team’s short lists. There was the mid-week talk that he was all but gone. Then, in the span of about 3 hours on O’Brien went from interviewing with the Browns, to staying in Happy Valley. The reactions from around the Penn State nation have been mixed, at best. After having stability unparalleled in major college sports with Joe Paterno, the PSU fan base was thrown right into the middle of the modern coaching carousel in less than a year.

Nov 17, 2012; University Park, PA, USA; Penn State Nittany Lions head coach Bill O

Look, I think we all wish things were different in the coaching profession. The loyalty of guys like Paterno was admirable, but that does simply not exist anymore. When O’Brien took over the Penn State football program a year ago yesterday, it was the start of a new era in more ways than one. I’m not sure anyone expected this type of circus less than a year in, but you are kidding yourself if you didn’t think it would ever happen. Bill O’Brien is an NFL guy, and success at the collegiate level was bound to attract the attention of the league. It happened with Charlie Weis in Notre Dame, it’s happened practically annually with Nick Saban, and it’s happening now with Brian Kelly. Heck, Chip Kelly TOOK the Tampa Bay job last year before changing his mind. A well known coach in these parts had done the same thing when he was one of the hot young names as well. I think you’ll recognize his name too. It was Joe Paterno with the Patriots.

I am not saying that Bill O’Brien is going to be at Penn State for the next 30 years, but I just hope PSU fans are able to keep some perspective here. I’ve seen far too many people saying they have lost all faith in the man, that if he had real integrity, this would not have happened. In 1982, coming off the program’s first national title, Joe Paterno had leverage, he knew it, and he was going to take advantage of it. He used that bully pulpit to transform Penn State University into a world class institution. On a much smaller scale, Bill O’Brien knew he had that type of opening, and he used it to make systemic changes at Penn State, many of which I expect to start trickling out following his press conference. Yes, he did get some more cash out of the deal, and good for him. Guess what though, every coach with leverage does that. PSU was immune to that for years.

Numerous sources have indicated that O’Brien was never planning on leaving, but recognized this window of opportunity, and wanted to take advantage of it. Yes, he interviewed with the Browns and the Eagles. I would be surprised if a lot of other college coaches don’t do the same thing every year, under the radar. To pretend this is going to hurt recruiting seems short sighted at best. Nick Saban is rumored for every job every year. Les Miles parlays coaching rumors into bigger contracts on an annual basis. Chip Kelly TOOK a job last year, and has put together a highly regarded recruiting class, even in the midst of an NCAA investigation, and very open interviews for NFL jobs right now.

I think everyone would prefer a return to the days where loyalty meant something more in the coaching profession, not just a means to extract more money. Penn State has known nothing by that since 1973, when Paterno accepted, but then turned down the Patriots job. In many ways, we have been insulated from the changing world in college football. That’s not to say it’s right what is happening, but it’s not going back to the way it was. If Penn State wants to remain an elite college program, and make no mistake, even in the midst of the last 14 months, PSU is one of those elite programs, it needs to start playing the game, and it did last week.

This caps a whirlwind week for Penn State fans who awoke Sunday morning to reports of significant NFL interest, with numerous reports throughout the following days seemingly indicating O’Brien’s intention to move on after just one season.

As our dear friend Evil Bill O’Brien pointed out, welcome to the 2nd annual “Welcome to the 2nd Annual “Get Outraged at Bill O’Brien on the 1st Thursday of the Year Event.”

As Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported earlier this evening, Bill O’Brien did indeed interview with the Browns earlier this week, and numerous reports have linked the PSU coach to a number of the NFL’s seven current head coach openings. Sports Illustrated’s Pete Thamel reported breaking news this evening that Penn State is making a significant push to keep their first year head coach.

According to Thamel’s report, the University has received a positive response from O’Brien and he is strongly considering staying. PSU has “tugged at O’Brien’s heartstrings and attachment to the school that gave him his first head coaching job”. Thamel indicates that emotional tie will be a key factor as O’Brien makes his decision.

The good news for PSU fans? Thursday is almost over.

As the page was turned to 2013, and Penn State fans looked forward to what we all hoped to be a much happier year, the ghosts of 2012 again reared their heads. As was first reported Tuesday morning by Sports Illustrated’s Pete Thamel, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett is expected to file a lawsuit in U.S. Federal Court Wednesday morning, challenging the NCAA’s sanctions against the Penn State football program. Specifics regarding the nature of the lawsuit have not been made public, but Thamel’s report indicated that Corbett will be challenging more than just the distribution of the $60 million fine. The disbursement of that fine money has been the subject of debate within the Pennsylvania State Legislature recently. There has been no indication that Penn State has any involvement with this action. Ironically, Corbett will still be announcing the lawsuit on campus at PSU’s Nittany Lion Inn.

It will be interesting to see where this goes, if for no other reason than public enemies #1, and 1A for a number of Penn State fans and supporters, Corbett and NCAA President Mark Emmert, will become the faces of this new round of fallout from the Sandusky Scandal. The NCAA has yet to comment, and Corbett’s office has only said they will address the “illegal sanctions”.

All of this comes at a unique time for Penn State, as they attempt to build off the positive momentum from this past season. Not only will any legal action bring the University back into media spotlight, despite their lack of direct involvement in the suit, but this also comes as rumors swirl about the future of Bill O’Brien. Numerous reports have O’Brien as a candidate for several of the 7 current NFL openings, although there has yet to be any indication O’Brien has interviewed, or intends to.

With the NFL’s “Black Monday” looming in less than 12 hours, it is no surprise that Bill O’Brien rumors have again resurfaced. According to an ESPN report on their NFL Countdown show from insider Chris Mortensen, O’Brien is on several team’s short lists to fill their impending coaching vacancies. According to Mortensen’s report, one reason O’Brien may have an interest in leaving PSU after just one season is that he was told by PSU officials when he was hired that the Sandusky scandal was largely a police matter, and the NCAA would not become involved. Oops.

O’Brien is said to have a very short list of teams he would consider leaving PSU for, which would seem to indicate that he is not actively looking to skip town less than 12 months after being hired. Two teams that Mortensen specifically mentioned are the Cleveland Browns, and Philadelphia Eagles. It is not known if either organization is one that would intrigue O’Brien. The reported $9 million buy out also looms large, as does a contract that guarantees O’Brien, at minimum, in the neighborhood of $2.5 million annually for 7 more seasons in Happy Valley.

I have also been told that Penn State was not “caught by surprise” by these rumors, but no indication was given whether that means PSU is actively involved in renegotiating O’Brien’s contract. It is also worth noting that ESPN did not report that O’Brien WAS leaving, just that several NFL franchises with openings have targeted him.

October 6, 2012; University Park, PA, USA; Penn State Nittany Lions linebacker Michael Mauti (42) during the game against the Northwestern Wildcats at Beaver Stadium.
10. MICHAEL MAUTI’S PICK 6* AT ILLINOIS

We’ll have more about this game later down the line, but I had to include this on the list somewhere. The game was still somewhat in doubt, believe it or not, as Illinois was driving at the end of the first half to get within two scores at the break. Instead, Mauti stepped in front of a Nathan Scheelhaase pass in the end zone, and proceeded to rumble 100 yards up the sideline. Unfortunately Michael needed about 101 yards as he was brought down just short of the goal line, and the resulting field goal was blocked (should’ve gone for it BOB!), but in a game as big on emotion as any for PSU this season, Mauti made the signature play. Besides, in 10 years when we’re telling our kids about the play, Mauti will have scored anyway.

9. TOP RECRUITS REAFFIRM THEIR COMMITMENTS TO PENN STATE

The ground was still smoldering on Saturday, July 28th in the aftermath of the Emmertbomb (TM) when top recruits Adam Breneman, Christian Hackenberg, Garrett Sickels, Brendan Mahon, Will Fuller, and Andrew Nelson visited Happy Valley to meet with Bill O’Brien. By that night, all 6 had reaffirmed their commitments to PSU (although Fuller bolted for Notre Dame about a week later). Sure, nothing is official until signing day (or when Breneman arrives on campus next month), but the headliners of what was at the time a highly regarded recruiting class all pledging to remain with PSU during the toughest moments in program history undoubtedly sent a strong message, and helped keep an important signing class from totally falling apart.

8. MAUTI, ZORDICH, AND COMPANY MEET THE MEDIA

As rumors swirled about most players leaving, and the entire Illinois coaching staff pitched tents outside of Holuba Hall, seniors Michael Mauti and and Mike Zordich, along with dozens of their teammates, made a brief 2 minute statement, pledging to stick with the besieged program in the face of the sanctions. At a time where it honestly felt like PSU may not have enough players to even field a team this season, the senior leaders gave PSU fans a reason to be optimistic.

7. PENN STATE KNOCKS OFF NAVY

After emotional losses against Ohio in the home opener, and the struggles on the road in Charlottesville, questions were swirling about Penn State’s ability to win even 2 games, let alone pull off a .500 record. The Nittany Lions put that to rest early on racing out to a 20-0 halftime lead, and coasting to a 34-7 over the Midshipmen. Sure, it was only Navy, and at the time much uncertainty remained, but the first win of the year eased many concerns, and certainly helped a tight team relax for the rest of the season.

October 20, 2012; Iowa City, IA, USA; Iowa Hawkeyes cornerback Micah Hyde (18) defends a pass against Penn State Nittany Lions wide receiver Allen Robinson (8) in the second quarter at Kinnick Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Reese Strickland-USA TODAY Sports

6. PSU BLOWS OUT IOWA IN KINNICK

OK, Iowa was pitiful 4-8 this season, but it had been 13 years since the Lions had won in Iowa City, and the blowout 38-14 win was one of the more enjoyable nights of the season. Everything was working for Penn State all night, leading 38-0 before the Hawkeyes tacked on two sores that are in the dictionary next to the definition of “meaingless”. The victory was especially sweet around these parts after our prediction roundtable drew the ire of the Iowa fanbase, who were surprisingly quiet during, and after the game. I, however, was not as gracious in victory.

Ahhh, the last weekend in October, and you know what that means…Halloween and time to Trick or Treat! it got me thinking, what should I go as this weekend for the big Penn State – Ohio State game.

Let me first try on something from the Scarlet and Grey closet. Let me see…perhaps I should go as former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel? Hmmm, I definitely have enough sweater vests that I could don, but I don’t think I own any that look as horrible as the ones he used to wear. Take a look, eeh gads!!!:

He’s probably about my height, and I think I can get down the walk. But, one problem remains, I don’t know how I should portray his ability to inform his players on the best way to liquidate their Big Ten memorabilia? Do I tell them where the best pawn shop in Columbus is or do I tell them in pig-Latin, “ooh-yay ood-shay o-gay ere-thay.” Oh, I know, I could tell Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee and he could help us out. That’s right, he’s not that bright when it comes to speaking is he? Nah, well, darn it, I’m not sure trying to be Coach Tressel for Halloween is going to work out for me. I just don’t have the pedigree of treachery and deceit that he has. It would take me years to learn all of that! Alas, I’m resigned to finding another costume for the Saturday’s big game!

Perhaps I can go as Woody Hayes! The man was a football genius, so I fit right in there with that, right?!?! I definitely have a palpable dislike for the maize and blue. BTW, I thought maize was a type of corn, not a color? At any rate, I’m sure I can find a floppy chapeau like his to wear to the game, a cute little beanie for my chrome dome! My only problem with going as Coach Hayes is my lack of a good uppercut! I know, Coach Hayes didn’t seem to have one, but it looks like he had a pretty good right cross though, just ask Clemson’s Charlie Bauman.

No matter, I know I could learn some pugilistic techniques at some of the awesome PSU tailgates that will be going on this weekend, so I know I could be a good Woody Hayes. Well, then again, hand-to-hand combat was never something I was very good at, so perhaps I ought to look in a different direction. I know…I can go as current Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I do like and respect Coach Meyer because he is very well-versed in teaching football, but even more importantly, he is a man of true faith and places his family values above his coaching desires. Those are characteristics that I can respect no matter what colors he wears! However, I do have trouble supporting his adult film industry look! If you don’t know what I’m talking about, take a look at his appearances as a Colorado State and Ohio State assistant coach.

Doesn’t that just say everything you need to know about coach Meyer before becoming the great and powerful Oz that he is today! The only thing missing from Coach Meyer in this picture is what his adult film name was. I could throw out a few, but this is a respectable site, and I don’t want to sully the waters with such minutiae. So, since I don’t think I want to have to go through my Halloween having to explain why I’m dressed as an adult film star, I think we should just move on shall we?

Maybe trying to go as one an Ohio State coach just isn’t my cup of tea. I’ve got it, I can go as one of the Penn State coaches. I guess there aren’t many to choose from.

I could go as former Penn State assistant coach Jerry San…never mind! Moving on…

Maybe I can go as the winningest division 1 college football coach of all-time. No, I’m not talking about Bobby Bowden. He can take his vacated wins and shove them up Renegade’s horsey’s rear end! I’m talking about former PSU coach Joe Paterno.

Again, I have the glasses but not the Harry Caray Coke-bottle type. But, dang, trying to go as an octogenarian and in a blue sports jacket is going to be a little difficult fore me to pull off. I know I can coach the team from my seats in Beaver Stadium about as well as he was the last few years of his tenure in Happy Valley (It doesn’t matter who was really in charge of the team, it was just seeing Joe’s presence on the sidelines that made it all worth while). My biggest challenge will be trying to pull of his squeaky voice in a Brooklyn accent. Many have tried, but few have duplicated this awesome feat. Since I am likely to lose my voice during the big game Saturday night, maybe I should look in one final direction.

Should I go as Coach O’Brien’s friendly ghost? Well, if I do that, I ‘m going to have to grow a dimple in my chin, shave off my facial hair, and develop a new twitter account, “@reallyreallyevilbillobrien”. I already have the no-hair thing working, so there’s a plus on my side. At any rate, my ability to pump up the troops like he does might suffer, and I think I would have to grow a bit taller to be like the genuine article, but none-the-less, the blue and white colors, I think, really fit my style!

Oh drats, it looks like 110,000 of my closest friends have already picked up on the idea to dress in white and go as coach O’Brien’s ghost for Saturday night’s game. Looks like I’ll just have to blend in with the rest of Nittany Nation and salute the boys in the Blue in White!

Happy Halloween everybody! Be safe and enjoy Trick or Treating…even if you are from Ohio!

OK, before we take a look at the games we have on tap for week #9, let’s quickly take a look back at how my “prime-3″ games and extra points picks for week#8 fared.

For Full Disclosure:

“Prime-3″ Picks from last week – 3-0 ATS, 3-0 SU. On the season, my record stands at 12-12 ATS, and 14-10 SU.

Extra Points Picks (ATS) from last week – 15-9-0. On the season, my record stands at 70-51-2.

…As always, I will try and do better this week!

“Prime-3 Games”:

In this week’s installment of “prime-3″, our attention is drawn to three interesting match-ups that have national as well as personal implications. We will look at a game pitting two SEC teams, one that involves a church and a Big 12 team, and finally we delve into a titanic clash in the Big Ten. We will look at some key match-ups in the showdown dubbed the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party involving the #10 Georgia Bulldogs and the #2 Florida Gators. We then shift our focus to ABC’s prime time tilt between the #5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish as they look to remain unbeaten as they head into Norman Oklahoma to do battle with the #6 Oklahoma Sooners. Finally, we look at a classic that is near and dear to my heart, the Big 33 Clash between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the student-driven Whiteout of the Penn State Nittany Lions.

And, without further ado, let’s get to the “Prime-3″ games!

I’m pretty sure this was after Mark Weisman’s first (and probably longest) carry of the game. This was arguably the Iowa offensive highlight of the night.

This would become a theme for most of the night. Some Iowa writer gave the Hawkeyes the edge at TE because, and I quote, “they block better”. Stay tuned on this one…

Iowa sort of did stuff on offense and got close enough to try a field goal. Said field goal sailed wide. If you haven’t been paying attention, going for it is almost always a better decision. Also, I like hashtags.

BOB naturally decided to go for it on 4th down on the Iowa side of the field. Iowa was forced to call timeout, as they were not even close to being ready for PSU’s offense to stay on the field. Iowa either doesn’t own video equipment, or just assumed Joe was still in charge. Probably both.

The first part is an actual quote from whoever the clown on the BTN broadcast was. The second part is what we all know is true. BOB is going for it on 4th down roughly 98.6% of the time. It’s just a fact.

This was one of those 1.4% of 4th downs where in BOB elected to kick. Naturally Sam Ficken rewarded this confidence with a made field goal. If you didn’t know it already, the rout was on.

After Bill Belton ran 11 yards for his first of 3 touchdowns, he was flagged for taunting, after holding his finger to his lips to quiet the Iowa crowd. Apparently this is frowned upon, although I think the penalty might have only been called because it was not required. Kinnick was practically silent by then.

Penn State returns to action after having their bye last week. They travel to Iowa City to do battle with the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Hawkeyes have been a perennial thorn in the side of the Nittany Lions. Looking back over the past decade, Iowa has given Penn State and their fans some of the most disappointing losses imaginable.

In 2008, Penn State was riding an emotional crest that saw them wins their first 9 games including wins at Wisconsin and Ohio State sandwiched around a win against Michigan. The Lions were 3 wins shy of making it to the national title game. Standing in the way of destiny…the Iowa Hawkeyes. Penn State was ahead at the end of three quarters by the scores of 23-14. After an Iowa touchdown, Penn State was flagged for a controversial pass interference penalty that gave Iowa good enough field position to kick the game-winning field goal as time expired. Down went the Nittany Lions BCS title hopes.

Many were highly anticipating the rematch of Iowa and Penn State at Beaver Stadium in 2009. Penn State opened the game with long Daryll Clark-to-Chaz Powell 79 yard touchdown play on their first offensive play from scrimmage. Penn State would go on and add a short field goal on their next possession. The Nittany Lions led 10-0 and wouldn’t score another point. The game turned when Iowa’s Adrian Clayborn blocked a punt to open the fourth quarter and returned it 53 yards for a score. That was a special teams momentum changer from which Penn State never fully recovered. They went on to lose the game 21-10.

And, who could forget the 2004 Penn State-Iowa Classic that ended 6-4. To this day, that was the most embarrassing and sad game I think I have ever seen, not just live, but EVER! That game fell in the middle of a stretch where Penn State lost 6 consecutive games. What I recall about that game was Iowa having the punter run out of the end zone and take a safety (the second such occurrence of the game mind you!) with only a few minutes remaining in the game. By taking the safety, that put the score at Iowa 6 and Penn State 4, thereby allowing Penn State to get the ball, needing just a field goal to win. Penn State was so inept, they couldn’t even move the ball far enough to get a field goal chance. Needless to say, that game was one of the low points for Joe Paterno and his coaching staff.

Each year brings new hope and optimism that this will be OUR year. Well, for Penn State fans, OUR year won’t be for awhile, but we still get a chance to exorcise those pesky Hawkeye demons. The Nittany Lions haven’t won in Kinnick Stadium since 1999. Bill O’Brien is hoping that a change in staff and a change in philosophy will be the tonic that Penn State needs to get a second consecutive win in this series. Last year Penn State whipped Iowa at Beaver Stadium by the score of 13-3. Tailback Silas Redd was a dominant force that the Hawkeye defenders could not tackle.

In 2012, Penn State and Iowa seem to be very similar in many ways. Both teams enter the contest 4-2 overall, but 2-0 in their respective divisions. Both teams have somewhat erratic offenses but superb defenses. The outcome of Saturday night’s game will likely hinge on who can take advantage of turnovers, and who can convert those opportunities into scores.

Let’s see what my keys to the game are for a Penn State win over Iowa:

The season is now four games old, and Penn State has just finished the non-conference portion of its slate with a record of 2-2. With Big Ten action set to kickoff next week, I thought it might be a good time to take stock of the things I see from my vantage point atop Beaver Stadium.

Matt McGloin

Nov 26, 2011; Madison, WI, USA; Penn State Nittany Lions quarterback Matt McGloin (11) looks for a receiver as his team plays the Wisconsin Badgers during the first half at Camp Randall Stadium.

Matt McGloin is a good quarterback! There, I said it. Like a child who doesn’t want to admit the truth to his parents, I have had a hard time formulating those words, but I did it! The truth shall set me free. I don’t know why I was so down on him. Perhaps it was because he would show up and lead remarkable comebacks (i.e. Northwestern in 2010), and I would talk him up, then he would pull a Houdini and disappear (i.e. Outback Bowl against Florida in 2011). Either way, I always felt like McGloin could be a good quarterback for Penn State, he just never could string enough games together to make the label stick.

This year seems to be different. Perhaps the new coaching regime has given him a never-seen-before confidence? Maybe a real structure and game plan, not just the stodgy old plays of a by-gone era have helped Matt. Heck, maybe knowing that he doesn’t have to worry about looking over his shoulder to see who is replacing him might have made him just relax. Whatever the case, through four games, Matt McGloin is becoming not just a good Penn State quarterback, but a great Penn State quarterback; he is becoming one of the best in the Big Ten!

Matt currently has a 138.0 passer rating. That puts him 3rd in the Big Ten (min. 75 pass attempts) while his number of completions (83) leads all Big Ten QB’s. Matt has also thrown for 9 TDs which is tops in the Big Ten and ranks him 14th nationally in that category. No doubt Matt would be the first to tell you that his success is not his alone, but rather due to the outstanding play of his offensive lineman. Matt has been kept clean and upright long enough to go through his progressions and find the open receiver.

Now, before I get all giddy and name McGloin as a Heisman finalist, I will temper my enthusiasm and state that they haven’t exactly played the Alabama’s and Oregon’s of the world. The Penn State schedule has been relatively easy by most people’s estimation. The difficulty of the conference schedule is always a different animal than the non-conference foes. I just hope that he can keep this up through the Big Ten slate because Matt has all the ability to be a big time QB in the Big Ten, he just has to go out on the field and execute.

I am sure many people will credit the new coaching staff or the play-calling with the upswing in Matt McGloin’s play from last year to this, and no doubt that has had something to do with it. But, what I see is a young man that has the confidence and the poise to know that he can make the big throw or the big play, and now he is going out on the field and showing it. In previous years, Matt would talk the talk, but he never really truly looked confident enough that he could walk the walk. This year, so far, everything has been different. Matt has taken some of the riverboat gambler out of himself and used his checkdowns rather than force the ball into tight windows. That’s the sign of a mature quarterback.

Where Have You Been Mr. Robinson?

September 22, 2012; University Park, PA, USA; Penn State Nittany Lions wide receiver Allen Robinson (8) catches a touchdown pass from Penn State Nittany Lions quarterback Matthew McGloin (not shown) in the first quarter at Beaver Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Rob Christy-US PRESSWIRE

Where have you been, Mr. Robinson, our Penn State nation turns its lonely eyes to you. What’s that you say, Mr. Robinson. JoePa has left and gone away, hey, hey, hey…hey, hey, hey.

OK, for those of you old enough to remember the Simon and Garfunkel hit from the 1967 Dustin Hoffman / Anne Bancroft film, perhaps this reference doesn’t make any sense. I suggest you spend a few moments at least Googling it or getting in on YouTube to conjure up some Americana gone by. Of course I took a poetic license and played around with the wording a bit, but I guess you may have figured that out! Either way, I digress.

Allen Robinson may just be the jewel that no other conspiring FBS schools came to poach (cough, cough – Tim Beckman (Lane Kiffin) - cough, cough). He has been Matt McGloin’s go-to guy, and a real find for this team. Even McGloin came out last week and took a shot at the departed PSU coaching staff by saying that they never gave Robinson a chance last year (he could cowboy up!). Allen has been everything a team could want in a WR1. He is tall (6’3″), he has speed and quickness, and he has some soft hands.

After 4 games, Robinson leads the Big Ten in yards (404), receiving TDs (5), and receptions (29). Not bad, for a player that is only a sophomore!

Penn State needs to find a compliment to Robinson across the field. So far, Penn State has gone through a committee of players to find another wide out such as Brandon Moseby-Felder, Trevor Williams, and Matt Zanellato. Alex Kenney has been a real find in the slot position, as he has developed a nice rapport with McGloin. The tight end position, led by Kyle Carter has produced some head-turning results as well. No matter though, like Derek Moye or Justin Brown was last year, Matt McGloin has found his security blanket in Allen Robinson. As long as the opposing teams continue to give him single coverage and not put any pressure on Matt, he will find Robinson and get the ball to him.

Penn State, coming off a victory over Navy – the first win in the Bill O’Brien era, will be in action this weekend as they play host to the Temple Owls at Beaver Stadium. The Owls are looking for their first win over the Nittany Lions since 1941. Temple Head Coach Steve Addazio had his team within one late fourth down and goal stop of defeating Penn State last year in Philadelphia, but Penn State held on and won 14-10. This year’s Temple team lacks much of the skill that it displayed last year, headlined by the departure of senior RB Bernard Pierce who is now with the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens, but they still have enough to upset Penn State if the Nittany Lions take them too lightly.

In comparing last week’s opponent, Navy, to Temple, the Owls should be able to throw the ball slightly better than Navy, but they shouldn’t have nearly as effective of a running game as Navy did. One characteristic that both Navy and Temple possess is their ability to play a full 60 minutes. For Temple, nothing exemplifies this more than the fact they were trailing at halftime by a score of 26-3 to Maryland, and fought back to outscore the Terrapins in the second half 24-10 (Temple lost 36-27). Temple fell just short of the amazing comeback, but they are a resilient bunch. Penn State will have have its hands full trying to keep this Owls team from breaking “the streak”.

Finally, something that may come into play that hasn’t really been much of a factor all season is the weather. The forecast for State College on Saturday calls for a 30% chance of rain/showers. Certainly I don’t think that either team will completely scrap their game plan if the weather does turn wet, but I think its worth noting that both teams may add in a few more running plays than perhaps originally planned.

OK, tomorrow, when I’m sitting in my seat at the Beaver Stadium “Blue Out” to support child abuse awareness, here is what I am going to be watching:

Finally! After an opening day let down against Ohio and the kicking game struggles in Charlottesville last week, Penn State (mostly) put it all together in Beaver Stadium with a convincing 34-7 win over the Midshipmen from the Naval Academy.

PSU won the toss, took the ball, and marched down the field in an efficient 7 play, 72 yard drive to take a 7-0 lead. The drive was capped by a 2 yard touchdown pass from McGloin to TE Jesse James, set up by a 45 yard strike from McGloin to Allen Robinson. After a 3 and out for the Midshipmen, Penn State struck quickly as McGloin again from Robinson on a 45 yard pass that went for 6 points. Navy drove the ball deep into Penn State territory on their next possession, but pressure on the Middies QB Trey Miller forced an ill advised pass that was intercepted by Gerald Hodges.

The Lions took advantage of the turnover, driving 90 yards on 14 plays, capped by another McGloin to Robinson touchdown pass. Struggling kicker Sam Ficken missed the extra point, but it would not matter on this day. The Lions again drove deep into Navy territory late in the first half, but on 4th and goal, Bill O’Brien passed on the short field goal attempt, and McGloin’s pass was broken up to end the threat. O’Brien would tell ESPN at halftime that the decision to go for it was more based on his confidence in the play he called, than it was a vote against Sam Ficken.

PSU’s final 2 scores came on a funky deflection that found its way to Allen Robinson for his 3rd touchdown catch of the day, and a Mike Hull fumble recovery that went 74 yards for a touchdown. Navy scored late against the Lions’ reserve defense to end the shut out, but the game was well in hand.

With Bill Belton and Derek Day both sidelined with injuries, Michael Zordich and Curtis Dukes split the carries. Zordich carried the ball 11 times for 50 yards, while Dukes had 11 for 47. Zordich also had 2 key receptions for 25 yards, both of which went for first downs, as well as several solid plays in pass protection to buy McGloin time.

A very relieved looking Coach O’Brien, fresh off a Gatorade bath as the clock hit 0:00, told the media he “felt very good for this team” and that this win was “in some ways, a long time coming.”

For the first time all season Penn State had put a full 60 minutes together, and took advantage of the chances that for a second straight week their defense gave them. Navy does not have the talent that PSU will see down their schedule, but the first win monkey is finally off their back, and with a struggling Temple team visiting Beaver Stadium next week, PSU can create some momentum prior to hitting the road to open the Big 10 season.

As far as the injuries are concerned, Belton and Day are considered day-to-day with an ankle and shoulder injury respectively. Starting left tackle Donovan Smith, who also missed todays’ game with an injured ankle, is expected back for next Saturday’s game.

Once I picked myself up off the floor following Saturday’s 17-16 defeat against Virginia, I found myself with a few random thoughts on the game, and where the Nittany Lions go from here. Here are five of them (Blue Kool Aid sold separately)

Steven Bench Should Get More Touches

The true freshman from Georgia was forced into action late in the first half after McGloin took a couple of shots to his right elbow. Here at VBR, we were not surprised. For one, we had been hearing Bench would be the guy should McGloin come out in a close game due to injury. Two, Bill O’Brien mentioned early in camp that Bench was pushing Paul Jones for the backup spot.

Bench showed flashes (opening snap sack not included) of his talent His passing still needs time and more reps, as he was fortunate to not be picked off on a couple of throws, but the talent and grasp of the offense was there. What stood out most to be was his ability to run the ball. As PSU continues to struggle to find ways to make plays, Bench’s ability to run the ball, while still providing a passing threat, could be an asset going forward. Bench won’t be confused for Michael Robinson or Daryll Clark, but he can be a threat to tuck in and run.

Like former head coach Joe Paterno used to say, you measure how good a team is or can be by the strides they make between game 1 and game 2. Like many of the Nittany Nation faithful, we figured that we would face a stiff test against Ohio, but we would somehow find a way to prevail. We didn’t. Now we will see what Penn State is made of!

Originally I thought Penn State would have beaten Ohio and would still be riding high from the emotions and drama surrounding last week’s game. So much so, that I thought Penn State might not be ready for the Cavaliers, a team coming off their first bowl game since 2007. I still think that Virginia is a tough, dangerous team, and may perhaps have more weapons at the skill positions than Penn State, but this game has taken on a whole new demeanor for the Nittany Lions.

The importance of this game, even though it is still early in the season, can not be underestimated. Another loss, especially of the blow out nature, could set this program back not only this year, but also for the remainder of the decade. That’s how important this game is. Am I being melodramatic -perhaps, but I really feel that in order for coach O’Brien to sell potential recruits on his brand of football at Penn State and what Penn State can do for them, he has to show them that he can win against relatively good competition.

Athletes go to Penn State for the education they receive first and foremost, but also to play against big-time schools on the biggest stage. No one plays football at Penn State just to compete; that’s a line reserved for the Savannah State’s of the world. Savannah State plays to compete, and, oh yea, to collect the $475,000 pay check after they get smoked. That does not happen at Penn State!

So what does Penn State need to do in order to regain some of their swagger? Read about some areas that I’ll be watching tomorrow:

Sep 1, 2012; University Park, PA, USA; Penn State Nittany Lions head coach Bill O

Penn State’s Defensive Front Four

Most writers and bloggers have spent much of the week lambasting Ted Roof and his new defensive scheme at Penn State. Let’s give the guy and his brand of defense a chance! What I want to see is how the defensive front four responds to being called out. They generated virtually no pass rush last week against Ohio. What will they be able to generate against Virginia?

It all starts with the defensive front four. If they give the QB time, a QB like Michael Rocco of Virginia or Tyler Tettleton of Ohio, they will pick you apart. We saw that last weekend against Ohio. Tettleton completed 31 of 41 passes, that’s a 75.6% completion percentage. Last week Michael Rocco, playing against FCS Richmond, completed 25 of 37 passes for a 67.6% clip. Both of these QB’s have poise in the pocket and will not be easily flustered by a hand in their face.

At times against Ohio, sophomore DE C.J. Olaniyan showed glimpses of the player that Penn Staters hope he can be. He managed to get the teams only sack and he deflected a screen pass. While taking DT Jordan Hill out of the picture is the primary focus for most teams, defensive players like Olaniyan, DT DaQuan Jones, and DE Sean Stanley absolutely must generate a pass rush against Cavalier QB, Michael Rocco. Rocco, unlike Tettleton, is not very fleet-a-foot. Forcing him to move around and scramble from the pocket may force him into some miscues.

3rd Down Conversion Rate

Once again I focus on the Penn State defense. With 9:37 to go in the 4th quarter and Penn State trailing by 3 points, Ohio took possession of the ball at their own 7 yard line. In years past, this is where the Penn State defense would step up, force a 3-and-out, and get the ball back to the offense for at least a tying score. Not last week! Time and time again Tettleton would complete a 3rd down pass to keep drives alive. This is how is went for Penn State in the second half. Ohio converted 11 of 12 their 3rd down plays in the second half and 13 of 21 (61.9%) for the game. Teams getting that type of production on 3rd down are going to have an excellent chance of winning, especially when they don’t turn the ball over for the game.

How can Penn State change this pattern? First, generate a pass rush to force quick decisions from the quarterback. Second, get off blocks and make tackles. The DBs can not keep getting jammed and blocked by WRs or TEs on quick passes and screens and then not be able to get off blocks. Finally, strip the ball, intercept a pass; any type of turnover will do. From what I have been hearing out of State College this week, coach Roof has been practicing stripping the ball techniques with his players.

Penn State Special Teams

Most everyone has been focusing on the failed Bill O’Brien experiment of placing Gerald Hodges deep as a kickoff/punt returner. Prior to the game everyone was speculating as to who would return kicks and punts, but I’ll bet no one had Hodges in their office pool. And, after the performance he gave last week, no one will be in a hurry to request his presence back there again any time soon! Instead of looking at how bad the decision was to put Hodges back there, I want to congratulate coach O’Brien for at least stepping outside the proverbial box and trying something new. OK…it didn’t work, but at least he tried it.

Personally, I think Penn State fans should be more concerned over their inept and downright offensive kicking game! Paterno always stressed defense and special teams as usually determining who won or lost. Well, the Penn State kicking game certainly did not help matters. Sophomore FG kicker Sam Ficken was not given a chance to kick any field goals even though they got to the Ohio 27 yard line part way through the 3rd quarter. For coach O’Brien to eschew a FG of 44 yards, especially when it could have tied the game, tells you all you need to know about his confidence in the kicking game. Perhaps I’m in the minority, but I think P/K Anthony Fera will be Penn State’s biggest loss due to sanctions. Penn State better find out soon what they have in young Ficken or else they are going to have to bring in another kicker for next year.

The punting situation may be as dire as it has been in recent memory. Junior Alex Butterworth handled the duties last Saturday, but only managed a 35.8 yard average on 5 punts. He never really turned the field position in the Nittany Lions favor. This isn’t Butterworth’s first punting foray either. He has seen spot duty since 2010 when Fera went out with an appendectomy.

On Saturday, watch closely to see how coach O’Brien handles his kicking duties. Does he stick with Butterworth, especially if he shanks one or two or doesn’t drive Virginia back? Does O’Brien show some confidence in Ficken? Somewhere this season, Penn State is going to need Ficken to come through, how much confidence will he have.

Perry Jones

Penn State needs to keep a close watch on the Virginia senior RB Perry Jones. Last week, Jones had a pedestrian performance going off for 52 yards and 1 score. He also caught 1 pass for 24 yards. Last year Jones rushed for 915 yards and 5 scores, and he caught 48 passes for 506 yards and 3 scores. Those numbers suggest that Rocco will have no problems checking down and throwing outlet passes to Jones. He can be just as dangerous as Beau Blankenship was for Ohio. It would behoove Penn State to keep a spy close by when he comes out of the backfield.

Watch to see how Penn State tries to limit what Jones can do in the open field. He will get his touches, as he is Virginia’s most experienced running back, but he will also be one of Rocco’s receiving weapons. If he gets time to maneuver then it could be a long day for Lions defense.

Penn State Offensive Play-calling

During his weekly press conference this week coach O’Brien stressed that he needed to do a better job of providing balance for the Nittany Lions offense. Against Ohio, Penn State threw the ball 48 times while only rushing it 22 times. It’s one thing to call more running plays, its another to do so when your starting tailback, Bill Belton, is highly questionable to play. If he is unable to go, the rushing load will fall to senior Derek Day who has a total of 15 career carries, over half of them coming in last week’s game.

Watch to see how many rushing attempts coach O’Brien gives Day, he has junior Curtis Dukes waiting in the wings. Dukes rushed for 237 yards and 1 score last year. While coach O’Brien wants to even out his run-pass ratio, putting that to the test this week is going to be awfully difficult considering the injury status of his starting tailback. If Penn State can get to 40 or more rushing attempts, you shuold feel good that Penn State will come out on top in this game.

As always, enjoy the game, and I would love to get your comments! WE ARE…PENN STATE
