Welcome back to the weekly Penn State football recruiting roundup here at Victory Bell Rings

Currently, the college football world is in a recruiting dead period. Despite this, there is still some news in the world of Penn State Football recruiting. Therefore, there is still a need for the recruiting roundup.

A top Penn State target is set to commit Thursday, the Nittany Lions made the top 5 of another top target, and a pair of commits had a great showing at The Opening Finals this past weekend.

With that said, let’s begin the roundup.

Jordan Miner set to commit

Thursday afternoon, four-star cornerback Jordan Miner will announce his college commitment. All signs point toward the Florida native committing to the Nittany Lions.

Penn State’s 2018 recruiting class currently has 13 commits, but seems primed to add another with Miner. In addition to the Nittany Lions, Miner holds offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, North Carolina, and Tennessee, among others.

Penn State makes Tyreke Smith’s top 5

Last week, four-star defensive lineman Tyreke Smith released his top 5 on Twitter. Unsurprisingly, the Nittany Lions were part of his top 5.

The other schools in his top 5 were Ohio State, Oregon, UCLA, and USC. Smith is a Cleveland native, and most recently visited Penn State on June 21. This marked his fourth visit to campus since the first of the year.

The home state Buckeyes will be very difficult to beat in Smith’s recruitment. However, as I have been saying, if any school is going to beat the Buckeyes it will be Penn State. Tyreke Smith and his family have a great relationship with James Franklin and Penn State’s staff. This will give the Nittany Lions a real shot at beating out the Buckeyes.

Penn State commits shine at The Opening Finals

The yearly Opening Finals took place this past weekend in Beaverton, Oregon. A pair of Penn State commits were there, and both of these players shined. These two players were running back Ricky Slade and wide receiver Justin Shorter.

Both Slade and Shorter were on Team Mach Speed, and the duo helped to lead them to winning the 7v7 tournament on Sunday. Justin Shorter was especially impressive on Sunday, catching seven passes, three of which went for touchdowns.

Shorter was a member of The Opening Finals ‘Dream Team’ constructed by Barton Simmons of 247 Sports. It would not be the least bit surprising to see him become a five-star recruit.

Tight end commit Zack Kuntz was also invited to compete at The Opening, however, had to miss due to his brother’s wedding.

Next: 2017 Player Preview: Brendan Mahon

That will do it for this week. As always, stay tuned here at Victory Bell Rings for all of the latest news in the world of Penn State football recruiting. Especially as the Nittany Lions seem primed to earn a commitment today.
