Although there’s uncertainty in his future, Penn State football kicker Joey Julius is still listed on the active roster for the 2017 season.

Before we dive in, VBR wishes Joey Julius well on his recovery and whatever he decides to do for 2017. When Julius entered treatment for eating disorders, many Penn State football fans didn’t know what his status would be for 2017. Regardless of his status, he played a big role in the kicking game in 2016.

The upcoming junior handled the kickoff duties in 2016. Julius became known for his big hits on defenders. Furthermore, he caused so much of a problem that a Minnesota defender received an ejection for targeting him (Video Courtesy of CBA News).

During his freshman year, he started as the primary kicking option. Julius connected on 10-of-12 field goals and 20-of-24 PATs. Despite a decent year on field goals, Tyler Davis’ perfect season took the job. He hit 8-of-8 field goals and 11-of-11 PATs in the same season.

Davis followed a strong 2015 with an even better 2016 hitting 62-of-62 PATs and 22-of-24 field goals. He’ll hold onto the kicking job, but Julius would’ve returned as the kickoff man. No other update has been given on his status for the season. However, Penn State still shows him on the roster, so it’s a promising sight.

Last year he became a weapon that caused a stir for opposing special teams coordinators. He recorded 45 touchbacks on 93 total kickoffs and averaged 62.1 yards. He carries a stronger leg than Davis and should still be the starter when he returns.

Whether he returns or not is the least of his concerns. His health and well-being matter much more.
