The annual Blue-White game saw the Blue team shut out the White team 26-0.

Penn State concluded its spring practice with the annual Blue-White spring game Saturday.  The Blue team got the shutout against the White team 26-0.  Considering that most of the returning starters and first teamers were on the Blue squad, the final score was not a surprise.  The White team consisted of many second team players.

What was a little bit of a surprise was quarterback Trace McSorley playing the entire first half for the Blue team.  He was a little off on some of his throws, but he wasn’t afraid to go deep.  McSorley finished his day going 13 of 21 for 114 yards an interception.

With a running clock and only 11 minute quarters, the game moved fairly quickly.  At the end of the first half it was 6-0 Blue team.

In the second half, things picked up offensively for Blue.  Quarterback Tommy Stevens played all of the second half for the Blue team and he didn’t disappoint.  He threw for 216 yards and 3 touchdowns.  His passes were pretty crisp and he showed off his arm with a few deep balls.  Stevens is certainly capable of running this offense.

Wide receivers Brandon Polk and Juwan Johnson had a touchdown each.  Johnson finished the day with 7 receptions and 81 yards to go along with his score.  He is going to be a name for fans to remember this fall.  DeAndre Thompkins led all the receivers in yards with 84, which could have been more as he came up just short on catching a couple of long throws.

With both Saquon Barkley and Miles Sanders sitting out this game, Andre Robinson and Mark Allen got the carries for the Blue team.  Andre Robinson scored the other touchdown on a dump off 9 yard pass from Stevens.  He also was involved in a trick play where his pass was intercepted.  If they use that again this fall, hopefully it will have a better outcome.

On the defensive side, end Shareef Miller certainly looks like he will be one of the starting defensive ends this fall.  He was credited with three tackles for loss and two sacks.

With the graduation of safety Malik Golden, there is an open spot at that position next to Marcus Allen who did not play Saturday.  Ayron Monroe is looking to fill that role and he was out to prove it during the game.  After nearly picking off one of McSorley’s passes earlier in the game, he did grab an interception for the White team in the second quarter and ran it back 65 yards, which was called back for an illegal block.

Overall, it was a complete domination by the Blue team, but it was good to escape without any other injuries besides the one that are known.  Now begins the long journey without football until fall practice in August.
