Former Penn State wide receiver Chris Godwin put up a surprising number in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine.

The value of the numbers put up at the NFL Combine can always be argued, but there’s one thing that can’t be argued — speed is speed. And, when it comes to playing wide receiver in the NFL, speed is a great thing to have. Former Penn State wide receiver surprised many in Indianapolis Saturday when he posted a fast time in the 40-yard dash.

Godwin ran the drill in 4.42 seconds, good enough for a tie for fifth place among receivers. Already known for his route running and ability to catch tough passes, Godwin worked over the offseason to add speed to his repertoire.

The fast forty time will likely garner a bit more interest from NFL teams for Godwin. Although he was already considered a very talented wide receiver in the class, the speed adds another level to his game.

Godwin also put up 19 reps during the bench press, giving him the recognition as a top performer — tied for second — among wide receivers in that event.

While Godwin’s fast time was just one among several wide receivers, the talk of the day centered around Washington’s John Ross. The speedy receiver set a new NFL Combine record with a blazing time of 4.22.

There are several pieces of the puzzle that go into a team deciding to draft a player, and the NFL Combine is just one of those pieces.
