Oh how the tide has turned for Penn State kicker Sam Ficken. After a miserable season in 2012 and continued inconsistency last year, Ficken started the 2014 season off with a bang. After his performance in the Croke Park Classic, Ficken has been named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week.
This is the third time in his career he’s earned the honor.
Ficken was on fire against the Knights. He converted on all four of his field goals and two extra points, accounting for more than half of Penn State’s 26 points.
Penn State fans likely had their hearts in their throats when Ficken trotted on the field for the game-winning attempt with just seconds remaining. Just two years ago, Ficken was the goat in a one-point loss at Virginia after he missed four field goals that day. However, on Saturday, Ficken went out with total confidence when he lined up for the 36-yarder that he knew would send the Nittany Lions home victorious.
Besides the game winner, Ficken also hit field goals from 22, 33 and 24 yards.
Throughout fall camp, the coaching staff discussed how impressive Ficken was looking in practice. He continued that momentum and started his 2014 season in the best way possible. Now a senior, Ficken has an opportunity to use his experience and veteran leadership to be a very important part of the Penn State offense.
