Moving right along in our “Know Your Enemy” series. its time to look at the Akron Zips. During this series we will profile all of Penn State’s opponents before moving on to profile the rest of the teams in the Big Ten.
The University of Akron is coming off a tough season, finishing 5-7 overall and 4-4 in the Mid-American Conference. However, the Zips certainly finished strongly, going 4-1 in the season’s final five contests.
Akron’s season was an up-and-down one, starting off 1-1 before dropping a heart breaker to No.11 Michigan 28-24. The loss to the Wolverines began the Zips five-game losing streak, leaving them too much ground to make up for a postseason bowl bid.
While the record wasn’t spotless, Akron showed it could compete with the likes of Michigan and Northern Illinois, losing by just a score or less to both ranked opponents. The 2013 season was a far cry from their one win campaign back in 2012 and Akron will look to improve on that number once again.
The Zips will come into Happy Valley for their second contest of the year after opening the season with Howard University. The match-up with the Nittany Lions will give Akron a true test to see just how far the program has come.
