The Penn State Board of Trustees has announced they will hold a special compensation meeting on Saturday, after which, with Dr. Barron in attendance, a press conference will be held to “make an announcement on a personnel decision within intercollegiate athletics”. All indications are the Penn State University will announce its new athletic director at the 12 PM press conference in Beaver Stadium.
In a letter obtained by the Centre Daily Times from Penn State President Dr. Eric Barron to all staff and coaches in intercollegiate athletics, he noted that pending the approval of the compensation committee, a new athletic director would be named. Dr. Barron went on to say, “The person I have selected was the first a unanimous choice of the screening committee. He continued. “I am sure you will share my enthusiasm and the endorsement of the screening committee in welcoming the new AD.”
Thus far no names have been directly linked to the position however, but a few names surfaced a few months ago, most notably Northwestern’s AD Jim Phillips and LSU’s AD Joe Alleva. The new athletic director will replace outgoing AD Dr. Dave Joyner who is set to retire on Aug. 1.
Dr. Joyner was appointed the interim athletic director in November 2011 in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal and later remained in the full-time position. His retirement was announced earlier this summer shortly after University President Dr. Eric Barron was hired in late spring.
