With a little over a month from the start of the 2014 college football season, preseason watch lists for various awards are starting to be released. On Monday, Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg had his name revealed on the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award.
The Maxwell Award, in it’s 78th year, is awarded annually to the nation’s best player.
Hackenberg, entering his second season as starting quarterback for the Nittany Lions had a superb year in 2013. He put up 2,955 passing yards with 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also ran for four touchdowns and led the Nittany Lions to one of the best passing offenses in the Big Ten Conference.
Those efforts earned Hackenberg Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors at the end of the season.
During his brilliant freshman campaign, Hackenberg broke 12 freshman passing records at the school and his four games of over 300 yards passing tied Matt McGloin for the school single season record.
Hackenberg enters this season as the leader of Penn State’s offense and will look to continue to grow and develop into the potential that made him a 5-star recruit and the top quarterback process in the 2013 class.
Penn State is tied with Notre Dame for the most even Maxwell Award winners with seven. The Nittany Lions who won the prestigious award include: Rich Lucas (1959), Glenn Ressler (1964), Mike Reid (1969), John Cappelletti (1973), Chuck Fusina (1978), Kerry Collins (1994) and Larry Johnson (2002).
Semifinalists for the award will be announced on November 3, with three finalists being named on November 24. The winner will be announced on December 11 at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show.
