Although football is the focus at Penn State and the start of the 2014 season is a little under two months away, there is some basketball news that needs to steal the spotlight for a bit. On Tuesday night, Ben Jones of Statecollege.com broke the news that head coach Patrick Chambers and the Penn State basketball program landed a verbal commitment from shooting guard Josh Reaves.

Penn State, not known as a basketball powerhouse has had trouble landed big-time recruits. The Nittany Lions have traditionally ranked near the bottom of the basketball standings in the tough Big Ten Conference. However, with the addition of Reaves and fellow 2015 verbal commitment Mike Watkins, the Nittany Lions now have two recruits in the ESPN Top 100.
The talented guard from Fairfax, VA stands at six-foot-four and will be a great addition in the backcourt. Aside from the Nittany Lions, Reaves had offers from big basketball programs like Georgetown, Maryland, Villanova, Wake Forest and VCU.
Reaves will be a welcomed addition to the Nittany Lions, who were known for their spectacular guard play this past season. He is currently the third member of Penn State’s 2015 recruiting class and joins power forward Watkins (also a 4-star by 247Sports) and small forward Deividas Zemgulis.
The Nittany Lions have really struggled, putting Coach Chambers’ job in jeopardy. The fact that he has been able to recruit a solid class for 2015, showing that Penn State may be turning the corner in basketball. Before the announcement of Reaves, the Nittany Lions were already ranked No. 13 in 2015 recruiting. That number is bound to improve once the rankings are updated.
