Penn State Football: Recruiting Update - 6/14/14

It was another big week for Penn State on the recruiting trail as Coach Franklin and his staff started the week off by hosting their first summer camp on campus in Happy Valley. After camp concluded on Sunday, the staff traveled to Georgia where they were guest instructors at the Georgia State Football Camp on Tuesday. The staff then headed to headed to Florida to participate in the Stetson University Football Camp before ending their week in Detroit, Michigan at the Sound Mind Sound Body Football Academy.

The opportunity to travel and guest instruct at these camps, allowed the Penn State coaches to work with some of the top athletes in the Southeast. A handful of players picked up offers from the Nittany Lions after their strong performances at camp and we take a look at the prospects below, who now hold Penn State offers.


Jalen Merrick
Offensive Tackle
Class of 2015
New Smyrna Beach (Florida)

Merrick picked up a Penn State offer this week after his performance at Stetson University Camp. The Penn State coaches, who were guest instructors at the camp, offered the prospect after they got to work with Merrick one-on-one.

The 6-foot-5, 295-pound prospect currently holds offers from 32 schools that include; Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida State, LSU, Miami, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Rutgers, and Wisconsin.

Rated by 247Sports.com as a 3-star prospect, Merrick is the #44 overall Offensive Tackle in the Class of 2015.

Kareem Gibson
Class of 2015
Greater Johnstown (Pennsylvania)

Gibson picked up a Penn State offer after camping at Penn State this past weekend. The 3-star cornerback prospect showcased his speed with a reported time of 4.48.

Gibson caught the eye of Defensive Coordinator Bob Shoop as he was physical and possessed lock down ability against wide receivers in 1-on-1 work.

The 5-foot-10, 167-pound prospect currently holds verbal offers from Akron, Ohio State, Pittsburgh, Temple, Virginia and West Virginia.

Josh Smith
Inside Linebacker
Class of 2015
Oakland (Tennessee)

Smith trimmed his list this past week as he plans on announcing his college decision in July at The Opening in Oregon.

He announced the news on Twitter and his five finalists are: Penn State, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and Purdue.

His Crystal Ball on 247Sports.com currently favors the Commodores with 90% of the experts choosing Vanderbilt.

Smith is currently ranked as a 4-star prospect as he’s the #11 ranked player in Tennessee and the #8 inside linebacker in the country.

Mecole Hardman
Class of 2016
Elbert County (Georgia)

Hardman picked up an offer this week after his standout performance at the Georgia State Camp, where Penn State staff attended as guest instructors. The 5-foot-11, 171-pound prospect currently holds offers from Miami, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Tennessee and Old Dominion.

Hardman is currently ranked as a 4-star prospect by Scout.com and is ranked as the #18 cornerback prospect in the country.

Jaleel Laguins
Outside Linebacker
Class of 2016
Oconee County (Georgia)

Laguins picked up his first offer this past week as the Nittany Lions offered the 6-foot-2, 215-pound prospect after his workout at the Georgia State Football Camp.

He worked with Linebackers coach Brent Pry and put on an impressive showing as he reportedly broad jumped 10-8, ran a 4.6 forty-yard dash and ran a shuttle time of 4.38.

Brendan Ferns
Class of 2016
St. Clairsville (Ohio)

Class of 2016 prospect, Brendan Ferns, picked up a Penn State offer this past week. Ferns is one of the top prospects in the state of Ohio as he is currently ranked by 247Sports.com as the #4 player in the state. He projects as a linebacker at the next level as he currently measures in at 6-foot-3 and 223-pounds.

The brother of Michigan freshman-to-be Michael Ferns, Brendan is an impressive athlete who has great size, speed and agility at the linebacker positions.

Ferns currently holds offers from Ohio State, Oklahoma, Maryland, NC State, Pittsburgh and West Virginia to name a few.

Ohio State may be tough to beat, but it doesn’t hurt that the Nittany Lions are in early on one of the top players in Ohio.

Jake Zembiec
Class of 2016
Aquinas Institute (New York)

Four-star quarterback prospect Jake Zembiec picked up a Penn State offer this past week after his performance at Penn State’s first summer camp.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound prospect is rated by 247Sports.com as the #1 quarterback in the state of New York and the #11 overall in the country. He currently holds offers from Penn State, Boston College, Nebraska, Oklahoma State and Syracuse.
