Penn State Player Preview: Quarterback Christian Hackenberg

Christian Hackenberg is coming off a season in which he was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. The highly touted quarterback out of Fork Union Military Academy will look to improve upon last season’s numbers and help lead the Nittany Lions to another winning season.

Hackenberg was fantastic as a true freshman in 2013. He threw for 2,955 yards and 20 touchdowns and helped the Lions pick up big conference wins over Michigan and Wisconsin. In his first year under center, he broke a number freshman passing records at Penn State and finished the season with the 3rd highest passing total in school history.

Coming into this season there are a number of new things for Hackenberg. He has to learn a new system uner a new head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterback coach. However, he got to participate in his first spring practice of his career, which should help him learn the new offense and schemes.

Since the end of last season, Hackenberg has bulked up and put on some weight. He currently measures in at 6-foot-4, 235-pounds up from the 220-pounds he weighted at the end of last season.

Now that Hackenberg has a full season under his belt and has had a full spring of practice, we expect him to put up numbers comparable to those of last season and compete for All-American status.

One of the biggest issues Hackenberg will have to overcome is the fact that he lost his top receiving target to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Although Allen Robinson is gone to the NFL, he has a plethora of options that are ready to step up and produce. His top targets this season will be Geno Lewis, Richy Anderson, Kyle Carter, Jesse James and Adam Breneman.

Regardless of who he’s throwing the ball too expect Hackenberg to throw for over 3,000 yards and 25 touchdowns this coming season.
