Penn State Football: Recruiting Update - 5/16/14


As another week comes to an end, a new group of up-and-coming prospects have received offers from the Penn State Football coaching staff.

Below is a look at some of the prospects who picked up a verbal offer from the Nittany Lion coaches this past week and we also include a note on a prospect who will be visiting in June.

Let’s take a look:

Grant Newsome
Offensive Tackle
Class of 2015
Lawrenceville Prep (New Jersey)

Grant Newsome is one of the top players in the state of New Jersey and he has recently announced his summer plans. Newsome will visit both Penn State and Michigan during the first week of June before deciding where he will continue his playing career.

It has long been noted that it would come down to the Nittany Lions and the Wolverines and we expect Coach Franklin and staff to seal the deal when he visits in a few weeks.

Newsome is currently a 4-star prospect who measures in at 6-foot-6 and 290 pounds.

Jawon Pass
Class of 2016
Carver High School (Georgia)

According to Ryan Bartow of 247Sports, Penn State offered Class of 2016 Quarterback Jawon Pass from Columbus, Georgia.

The 6-foot-5, 225-pound dual-threat quarterback is one of the top prospects in the Class of 2016 as he is currently ranked as the number 2 dual-treat quarterback in 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Pass has picked up a number of offers this past week that include offers from Virginia Tech, Ohio State, and UAB. He also holds offers from Mississippi State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Miami, and Florida.

Shaquille Quarterman
Inside linebacker
Class of 2016
Oakleaf High School (Florida)

The Nittany Lions offered one of the top middle linebackers in the Class of 2016 when they offered Shaquille Quarterman from Florida. The 6-foot-2, 242-pound prospect is currently rated as a 4-star prospect by

He currently holds sixteen offers that range from Auburn, to Michigan to Georgia, Florida, Ohio State, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.

He recently told Chad Simmons of that, “Auburn is definitely on top.”

Shavar Manuel
Defensive End
Class of 2016
Blake High School (Florida)

Penn State is in early on one of the top prospects in the Class of 2016. Shavar Manuel, rated by 247Sports as the number 1 Strong-Side Defensive End in the country, picked up a Penn State offer earlier this week.

The 6-foot-3, 262-pound prospect picked up the offer after Penn State Wide Receiver Coach Josh Gattis evaluated him during his afternoon practice last week. The sophomore prospect currently holds offers from Alabama, Florida State, Florida, Miami, Clemson, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

John Broussard
Class of 2016
Central High School (Alabama)

Broussard is one of the top cornerback prospects in the Class of 2016 as he is already rated as a 4-star prospect by The 6-foot, 165-pound prospect picked up his eleventh offer this week when Penn State offered him.

Rated by 247Sports as the top cornerback in the country in the Class of 2016, the Nittany Lions join the likes of LSU, Louisville, Georgia, Clemson, and Nebraska as ones of have offered the rising sophomore.
