Penn State head coach James Franklin has done a great job recruiting in his short time with the Nittany Lions. Currently, Penn State is ranked as the No. 2 class according to 247Sports.com. The Nittany Lions have 12 verbal commitments for the 2015 class. One of those is 4-star offensive guard Steven Gonzalez. Considered to be headed to Ohio State, Gonzalez surprised with a commitment to Penn State on March 29.

Gonzalez, from Union City, New Jersey, is one of the top guards available for 2015. VBR caught up with the future Nittany Lion and asked him five quick questions about his decision to come to Happy Valley.

Was there an ultimate deciding factor in your choice of Penn State? If so, what was it?

I feel like the coaches were the deciding factor, I loved everything about PSU. It was just more about getting up there and meeting some coaches like Coach Franklin and Coach Hand.

What are your impressions of Coach Franklin so far?

Coach Franklin is going to be a great coach. He brought a Vandy team who was unheard of in a huge conference two multiple winning seasons with 2 bowl game appearances. Now imagine with that with the recruiting powerhouse PSU is, plus with every other thing PSU has to offer. We’ll be winning national championships in no time.

I’ve heard that some of the other 2015 commits have been doing their own recruiting for the class. Did any of them reach out to you before you made your choice?

I really didn’t talk to most of them before my decision but I was very close with Juwan Johnson before I committed.

Now that you are a part of the class, are you planning on doing some persuading of your own to other recruits you may know?

I’m going to try haha, I hopefully can help change some minds of some recruits.

How excited are you for your first Beaver Stadium White Out as a player?

Just to step on the field as a recruit gives me chills. I can’t imagine playing in front of 107k strong! I can’t wait! WE ARE!
