On the eve of Penn State’s annual spring football scrimmage, VBR continues takes one final look at a group of players sure to impact not only the current roster, but also the future – the freshmen.
While many of the most highly touted members of Penn State’s 2014 recruiting class will be joining the team for summer workouts, a few recruits chose to enroll in January for the spring semester making them eligible for spring workouts with the Lions including participation in the Blue-White game. Those freshmen enrolling early include DT Tarow Barney (NOTE: Barney is in his first year with the Nittany Lions but has 2 years of eligibility remaining after playing 2 years at Northwest Mississippi Community College), DT Antoine White, OT Chasz Wright, WR De’Andre Thompkins, and QB Michael O’Connor. Of that list, the most immediate impact to the 2014 Nittany Lions is likely to be WR De’Andre Thompkins and OT Chasz Wright.
Since the Blue-White game is just a scrimmage, many of the projected starters likely to take the field in Dublin, Ireland against UCF at the end of August, will probably see a limited number of snaps on Saturday. That allows for some of the team’s younger members to see the field. One of the players I am most anxious to see is QB Michael O’Connor.
