Today has been another major spring recruiting weekend for James Franklin and the coaching staff. Among today’s key visitors was 247Sports Top 100 offensive guard Steven Gonzalez, who has long been considered a likely Ohio State Buckeye. Not anymore. Per multiple outlets, Gonzalez has given his verbal commitment to Franklin and the Nittany Lions.
247’s Composite Rankings put Gonzalez as the 4th best player in the Garden State, and the 7th best offensive guard in the country. He is the second New Jersey native to join the 2015 class, following wide receiver Juwan Johnson’s commitment to PSU. In a year where Penn State figures to aggressively pursue multiple offensive linemen, Gonzalez is the second commitment, joining Ryan Bates.
Boston College, Rutgers, Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Virginia were among his offers, in addition to the offer from OSU, of course. Gonzalez is just the latest PSU verbal commitment to pick the Lions over Ohio State, joining other 2015 classmates such as Andre Robinson and Bates.
As of Gonzalez’ commitment, Penn State jumped to 2nd overall in the 247Sports national rankings, trailing only Texas A&M. With other big names such as Jordan Whitehead and Manny Bowen on campus this weekend, that could change yet today.
