Today is not just a reason to celebrate because it’s St. Patrick’s Day. Today marks the official beginning of the football portion of the James Franklin Era at Penn State. To this point for Franklin it’s been all about recruiting and hiring a coaching staff. The players’ involvement has been confined to the weight room. However, that all changes today when Franklin gets to see his new team on the practice field for the first time and can begin implementing his schemes and style of play.
While the schemes likely won’t be fully implemented and the depth chart won’t be completely settled until the summer, the spring will allow players and coaches alike to get a sense of where Penn State will be headed under Franklin. Everything will be in preparation for the Nittany Lions’ first game of the 2014 season on August 30 against Central Florida in the Croke Park Classic in Dublin, Ireland.
Before the first practice begins this afternoon, Franklin will host a press conference in which he’s expected to talk about his plan for spring practice.
The Nittany Lions return 41 letterwinners and 15 starters from the 2013 team. Seven of those starters are on offense, seven are on defense and one is from special teams. Penn State will have 15 practices before ending with the annual Blue-White Game on April 12th. Kickoff for that game is set for 1:30 p.m.
I will be on campus today attending both the press conference and practice, so be sure to check out Victory Bell Rings on Twitter and watch the site for updates throughout the day.
