Now that the early position previews have wrapped up VBR has put together 2-deep depth chart projections for offense and defense. Today’s version looks at the offense. There are some big holes to fill with guys like guard John Urschel and wide receiver Allen Robinson no longer around. Luckily, the key position of quarterback is solid with the return of Big Ten Freshman of the Year Christian Hackenberg.
This depth chart only takes into account players who are on are the roster for spring practice. Due to depth issues, several incoming freshman will likely be needed to fill holes on the depth chart.
Some of these projections are bound to change, but for now, it’s a good starting point to preview the upcoming season.
QB- Christian Hackenberg, D.J. Crook, Austin Whipple
RB- Zach Zwinak, Bill Belton, Akeel Lynch
WR- Geno Lewis, Jonathan Warner
WR- Matt Zanellato, DaSean Hamilton
WR- Richy Anderson, De’Andre Thompkins
OG- Miles Dieffenbach, Anthony Alosi, Brendan Mahon
OT- Donovan Smith, Andrew Nelson, Chasz Wright
C- Angelo Mangiro, Wendy Laurent
TE- Jesse James, Kyle Carter, Adam Breneman, Brent Wilkerson
Freshmen wide receivers Saeed Blacknall and Chris Godwin could make the roster due to a lack of depth at the wide receiver position. The battle for the backup quarterback spot will be one to watch. Ideally, 4-star recruit Michael O’Connor, who’s already in school, will be given a redshirt so that there could be another year of separation between he and Hackenberg. The offensive line is another thin area that will need newcomers to step up and fill in.
Be sure to watch for VBR’s defensive depth chart coming soon.
