Penn State (4-27-3, 1-18-1 CHA) faced off against No. 9 Robert Morris (24-7-3 (13-5-2 CHA) in their last weekend series of the regular season and dropped two games to the ranked Colonials, 5-2 on Friday and 4-0 on Saturday. Freshmen Laura Bowman and Amy Petersen tallied the Nittany Lions only two goals of the weekend while Nicole Paniccia took both starts in net in the series. Teammate Hannah Hoenshell added two assists through the two games as well.
The Nittany Lions fell down early to the Colonials in Friday night’s game on a first period goal by Robert Morris’ Katelyn Scott. Penn State gave up the next three goals to Robert Morris before Bowman tallied her tenth of the year, and the first player to reach double digits in scoring on the team this season, on Colonial goaltender Jessica Dodds to cut the lead to 4-1 five minutes into the third period. Linemate Petersen notched her fifth of the season near the end of the game after the Colonials retook a four-goal advantage but the freshman got the Nittany Lions back within three with 4:38 remaining in the game.
Paniccia stopped 40 of 45 Colonial shots in net on Friday night, while the offense churned out 19 total shots on Dodds through three periods.
In Saturday’s game, Penn State gave up a shorthanded goal at 12:06 of the first period to Colonial Rebecca Vint on a hooking penalty on teammate Maddie Collias to go up 1-0 early. Robert Morris netted one goal in the second and two in the third to cap off a 4-0 shutout win against the Nittany Lions.
Colonial goaltender Jessica Dodds stopped 22 Nittany Lions shots in the shutout win while across the ice Paniccia saved 29 of 33 Robert Morris chances.
With the regular season over, Penn State will play at RIT next weekend to kick off the CHA Tournament starting Friday night. The Nittany Lions will play the Tigers Friday night at 7 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. if necessary in the best of three round.
