The Penn State Nittany Lions recently finished up recruiting for the 2014 class. Now, it’s time to start thinking about the next players who will become future Nittany Lions. New head coach James Franklin came in at the tail end of recruiting for 2014, but was still able to land some recruits whom he had originally recruited at Vanderbilt. He now has an entire year to work on the next class and has already extended offers to some of the best recruits in the 2015 class.
Before coming to Penn State, Franklin earned the reputation of being a great recruiter. He was able to bring top talent to Vanderbilt, a school with tough admission requirements and a history of residing at the bottom of the SEC standings. Now, Franklin gets to recruit for a big-time football school. Penn State has a large following and a strong tradition that will appeal to future recruits. Also, the football facilities in Happy Valley are top-notch.
The 2014 class for Penn State finished as the No. 23 class in the nation. It’s a solid class that fills a lot of holes in the roster for the Nittany Lions. However, it’s lacking any big names that makes the class stand out. For the next group of recruits, Franklin has already begun making offers to some of the top talent. Of course, the recruits still have another year left of high school football and anything can happen.
Several players who are near the top of their position have the Nittany Lions high on their lists.
One of the names that Franklin is going after for 2015 is 4-star offensive guard Richie Pettibon. Linemen, both offensive and defensive are of utmost importance to a team’s success. Another offensive lineman who Penn State is very interested in is Pennsylvania native Ryan Bates. He’s a 4-star recruit who has the Nittany Lions at the top of his list.
4-star defensive end Kamonte Carter from Maryland is one of the best ends in the nation and is currently very high on the Nittany Lions. Franklin will likely look to land a stud defensive lineman in 2015, as that is something that the 2014 class lacked.
The interesting name to watch is Ohio Native Jerome Baker. The 4-star recruit is the top-rated athlete in the nation. He is of course a target of Ohio State and could make his final decision between the Buckeyes and the Nittany Lions. Franklin has made no secret of the fact that he plans to dominate the region in recruiting. Signing Baker would open some eyes and be a huge acquisition for the Nittany Lions.
Those are just some of the names that Franklin is targeting. So far, his focus has been on 4 and 5-star recruits, something he was known for at Vanderbilt.
Penn State fans should be excited for the future under Franklin. He has made it very clear that he plans to work as hard as he can to bring the best players to Happy Valley.
