A Farewell Post from Matt de Bear

As this football season began to draw to a close over the last few weeks, I began to think about the last 12 or so months.  About this time a year ago, my good friend Tim Tolley, who conned me into joining VBR in the spring of 2012, decided to turn over the site to me, after about a year in charge.  As he wrote back then, he had done pretty much everything he had wanted, and couldn’t imagine topping the 2012 season.  I sit here today, feeling much the same way.  I wasn’t able to sit in the box or connect with recruits like Tim had, but I did have the opportunity to share the highs and lows of a football season, and off season, with some of the greatest fans in the country.  So, I’m moving on, and turning the keys over to Barry Leonard, who has done a fantastic job as my right hand man this season.  Not to mention covering all of the PSU home games from Beaver Stadium this year, and even making the roadie to Columbus (blame him for 63-14!).  Be nice to him!

It wouldn’t be one of these farewell posts without some thank yous.  First of all, I have to thank Tim.  Without him, I’d never have even considered writing for VBR in the first place, let alone taking over the Lead Editor spot.  So really, you should be blaming him for having to put up with me for the past 18 or so months.  I was just a PSU alumnus, and fan, that had some things he wanted to share, and only some of those were gambling picks.  I went from resident degenerate, to unofficial assistant, to boss, all because he thought I’d be good.  I will let you decide if he was right.

All the folks at Fansided, and there are far too many to list, have been fantastic as well.  It’s a pretty humbling thought to realize something you write is going to be read (and critiqued, and proofread) by a few thousand people.  Being able to write things about the insanity of the Manti Te’o reaction earlier this year, a letter to some PSU legends, or just a wildly entertaining recap of my whiskey fueled ramblings during the 2012 Iowa game has been unbelievable.  So to everyone who let me do this the way I wanted, thank you.

I want to thank Corey, Eric, Mary, and Barry too.  You guys have been a blast to work with, and your efforts never went unnoticed.  Not only did you take some of the pressure off of me, you also provided a different perspective for our readers.

Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention our many thousands of readers.  Many of you have reached out via email with your thoughts, good and bad, and many more have followed me on Twitter and ripped me there.  I also want to give a special thank you to our always entertaining, often irrational, Facebook commenters.  You guys are fantastic.  Whether we agreed or not, thank you for reading.  Your passion is what made this so fun. I may no longer be posting here, but I’ll still be around on Twitter, and I may pop up on Facebook from time to time.

I could go on and on about how much fun this has been, but you have all read enough by me since I wrote this (MOXIE!) just a few days more than 18 months ago.  Thank you all, and WE ARE!
