Penn State played their last home game of the fall semester Saturday afternoon against the Maine Black Bears and skated to a 1-1 tie after both teams put up one goal each in the second period.
Maine held the edge in shots through the first period, 14-5, but Penn State goaltender Nicole Paniccia had answers for them all and the teams went scoreless into the first intermission. In the second, Shannon Yoxheimer tallied her second goal in two games with 5:15 left in the period, firing a snipe past Black Bear goaltender Mariah Fujimagari to give Penn State a 1-0 lead. The lead didn’t last very long as Maine battled back hard at the end of the period to tie the game at one with nine seconds to go in the frame. Penn State again outshot its opponent in the third period, this time 10-8. However, it was not able to get anything past Fujimagari despite controlling a good portion of the 20-minute period.
The teams then went to an overtime period, which Maine dominated in shots 6-0 yet again Paniccia stopped them all as the teams played to a 1-1 tie after 65 minutes of play.
The Black Bears outshot Penn State 45-30 through three periods of play and the extra five-minute overtime frame. Neither team were able to capitalize on the extra-player advantage, with Penn State going 0-3 and Maine 0-1 on the afternoon. For the Nittany Lions, Paniccia continued to be excellent between the pipes, saving 44 of 45 Black Bear shots and keeping them in the game through the 65 minutes of play.
The tie puts Penn State’s record at 3-12-2. The Nittany Lions travel to play Mercyhurst next Friday and Saturday, with a 3 p.m. start and a 2 p.m. start respectively.
