For the second straight year, Penn State went to overtime in their home finale, but unlike a year ago, the Lions came up short. Nebraska claimed a come from behind 23-20 victory after kicking a game winning field goal in the first overtime. Here are your PSU players of the game.
Offense: Zach Zwinak, 35 carries, 149 yards
Bill Belton did not suit up after dealing with a shoulder injury and strep throat, and all but 5 of the carries went to Zwinak. The junior took full advantage, eclipsing 100 yards for the third straight game. The Penn State offense struggled to consistently move the ball, punting 11 times. but Zwinak was a consistent force, accounting for 149 of PSU’s 170 yards on the ground.
Honorable Mention: Jesse James, Allen Robinson
Defense: Brandon Bell, 6 tackles, 1 forced fumble
Since the 3rd quarter of the Minnesota game, it is pretty easy to say that the Penn State defense has turned a corner. John Butler’s crew held Nebraska to just 13 points (7 came on Kenny Bell kickoff return), as well as forcing two Cornhusker fumbles. Freshman linebacker Brandon Bell was involved in many of the games key plays, including forcing a fumble deep in Nebraska territory that set up the 2nd PSU score of the day. Bell also was active in getting to Nebraska QB Ron Kellogg III on the blitz, something missing from the PSU defense much of the year.
Honorable Mention: Mike Hull, C.J. Olaniyan
