Penn State Women's Hockey: Lions Drop Home Opener

Penn State dropped their home opener 2-1 to the Union Dutchwomen on Friday night. Shannon Yoxheimer netted her third goal of the season as the Nittany Lions dropped to 1-3-1 for the season with the loss.

Two Union power play goals were the difference in the game. Though the teams were almost even at full strength, Union took advantage of their power play opportunities in their win over the Nittany Lions. Both Union power play goals were within the first 15 seconds of the advantage, the first beating starting PSU goaltender Nicole Paniccia with traffic in front and the second just squirting through her pads for a five-hole goal.

After Union lead 1-0 coming into the second frame, Shannon Yoxheimer’s beautiful snipe that went top shelf on Union goalie Shenae Lundberg tied the game up with 3:57 gone in the middle period. However, that would be the team’s only goal of the night despite having some great chances in the offensive zone. Shots went back and forth throughout the night but Union ended up on top 24-23.

Penn State will rematch the Union Dutchwomen Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. I’ll be back livetweeting the game in the press box again as the team tries to even the series against Union at 1.
