After a raucous atmosphere on Saturday night in Beaver Stadium, one which many top recruits witnessed in person, it did not take long for the impact to be felt. The nation’s top tight end prospect in the 2014 class, Mike Gesicki, has given Penn State his verbal commitment.
Gesicki is ranked as a 4 star prospect by 247, and the 2nd best prospect in the state of New Jersey. While he held numerous offers, including Rutgers and Florida State, Big 10 rival Ohio State was Gesicki’s other top choice.
This marks the second straight class that Bill O’Brien has landed one of the nation’s top players at a key position in his offense. Adam Breneman of course joined the program a year ago, and was also very instrumental in luring Gesicki to Happy Valley. After Saturday’s 43-40 win over Michigan, Gesicki spoke very highly of Breneman, as well as his future quarterback Christian Hackenberg, both of whom spoke with him during his visit to PSU.
This brings PSU’s Class of 2014 to 13, and with the reduction in the NCAA sanctions, that number could potentially grow as high as 23, depending on early enrollments. According to 247, this moves PSU up 2 slots to #31 in the overall rankings, which is good enough for 4th overall in the Big 10.
Welcome to Penn State, Mike!
