Penn State vs. Kent State: Blue-White Roundtable

We’re going rogue this week on the roundtable.  The Dogg’s over at JoePa’s Doghouse lead a somewhat (ok, completely) bloodless coup and were in charge of this week’s questions.  Take a look at the VBR responses below, and make sure you check out our friends from the blogosphere too:

Penn State fans love to overreact to losses.  What would you tell someone who is on the ledge after the defensive meltdown against Central Florida?

Take a deep breath, and relax.  For one, UCF is a pretty good team, with a great offense, and one that I think can win 10 games again this year, and maybe more.  We didn’t exactly lose to Central Michigan here. Sure, there are things to worry about, like the lack of anything from the d-line, but firing coaches, or demanding massive changes is just asinine.  Give the staff, who should have earned a bit of trust last year, time to figure this out.

A lot has been made about Penn State’s attendance numbers being down this year.  What do you believe is the main cause?  How would you fix it?

First of all, anyone who blames this on the sanctions or what’s happened in the last 2 years is only partially right.  This has been a trend since around 2007, it seems like.  The last 22+ months haven’t helped, but it’s not the cause.  I think the main cause is just a general lack of excitement about the program that began really began during the QB14 years.  Heck, even that 2011 Illinois game, with a 7-1 team, drew 97,00+ (and don’t blame weather).  STEP will get some blame too, but I look at what it costs to go to a Michigan or Ohio State game, and still say PSU football is a great deal.

The only thing that can be done to fix it is patience.  I think the next 3-4 years are 8-4 at best type seasons with the restrictions we’re playing under.  If and when PSU emerges from the sanctions, and as long as a competent coach (OB or someone else) is running things you’ll see PSU return to the top of the Big 10 and national polls consistently, and the fans starting to return.

The MAC has got to be, like, the most boring conference ever.  Let’s assume that the devil (Dave Joyner) signs a deal with The Devil and Penn State has to do the unthinkable: travel to a MAC opponent.  What team would you like to travel to?  What team would you hate to travel to?

Where would I like to go? Easy: Ohio University, Athens.  I grew up a mere 60 minute drive from OU, and have had many a hazy night there.  If you like State College, you’ll like Athens.  Very similar setting, and just a fun town.  Where am I not going? Eastern Michigan. It’s 15 minutes away. I can go there whenever I want, and I don’t.

Obligatory Kent State Question:  Dri Archer is a pretty rad name.  Sterling Archer is an even cooler name.  Since Archer was obviously influenced by James Bond…What is your favorite Bond movie?

I love the older Bond movies, but Casino Royale was fantastic.

Oh yeah.  How about a score prediction?

38-10 Lions.  The defensive leadership steps up and plays with their hair on fire after hearing all week how bad they are.  Hack takes another couple steps forward, and Allen Robinson continues to put up video game numbers.
