As was widely rumored back over the summer, Penn State and West Virginia have agreed to a home and home series from 2023-24. By the times the teams kickoff the 2023 season in Beaver Stadium, it will have been nearly 31 years since their last meeting, which the Lions claimed 40-26 at West Virginia. Both the 2023 and 2024 games will serve as each team’s season opener, with the ’23 game at Penn State, and ’24 in Morgantown. The two teams played 59 times, including 46 straight meetings from 1947-1992. PSU holds the advantage 48-9-2 in the series.
2023 will bring two major conference (or at least how those conferences currently stand) opponents to Beaver Stadium, with Virginia Tech making their first ever appearance two weeks after the Mountaineers open that season in State College.
And now, a word from the Athletic Directors
The renewal of our West Virginia rivalry is a series our alumni and fans have wanted to see on our future schedules. As we prepare to move to a nine-game Big Ten schedule (2016), I am very pleased that we have been to able to schedule old rivals like West Virginia and Pitt and add Virginia Tech in upcoming years.
I know how exciting it was to play in Beaver Stadium and to have the Nittany Lions come to Morgantown. I think the renewal of this series will be great for the fan bases of the two schools as both locations provide an easy drive. Both Universities have rich traditions and history, and to be able to revive the memories and the fun is what makes college football so special.
