If there’s a better feel good story in college football than the turnaround from a year ago for Penn State’s Sam Ficken, I am not really sure what it is. That story got just a bit better today as Ficken earned his second straight Big 10 Special Teams Player of the Week going back to last season. Ficken was 3 for 3, including a career long 46 yard field goal in Saturday’s 23-17 win over the Orange. Those 3 kicks pushed his streak of made field goals to 13 straight.
Freshman quarterback won the first of what is likely to be several Big 10 Freshman of the Week honors with his 22 of 31, 278 yard, 2 touchdown performance in MetLife Stadium. In his first ever collegiate game, Hackenberg earned the starting job, and played all but 1 series. The insertion of All American wide receiver Allen Robinson seemed to settle him in, throwing for 209 yards and 2 scores in the second half.
Illinois’ Nathan Scheelhaase won Offensive Player of the Week honors for his 416 yard, two touchdown performance in the Illini’s win over Southern Illinois. Northwestern’s junior linebacker Collin Ellis’ takes him the Defensive Player of the Week after returning two interceptions for touchdowns in their win at Cal.
