Revisiting The Penn State Recruiting Class Of 2013-DB Kasey Gaines

Kasey Gaines is one of those players that probably made a few of you scratch your heads when he was offered, and subsequently committed to Penn State.  That’s not meant as a slight to the young man from Georgia by any means, but prior to his PSU offer, he was well off the radar for Nittany Lion fans.  However, I don’t expect that to remain the case for long.

Gaines is a native of Loganville, GA, and came to Penn State thanks to the southern recruiting efforts of former defensive coordinator Ted Roof.  After Roof’s departure to his alma mater Georgia Tech, Gaines never wavered in his commitment to the Lions. He chose PSU primarily over Miami (OH) and Harvard.  Obviously, he’s a smart kid with the opportunity to attend Harvard, but he’s a much better player than he gets credit for, showing very good instincts that will get him on the field at PSU down the road.

In the immediate future, I expect the 3-star prospect (per 247) to likely redshirt this year.  At 5’10″, 165 lbs., both player and program would benefit from an extra year to put on some size in the weight room, as well as adjust to to the college game.  As with Neiko Robinson, who we profiled yesterday, a 2013 impact could come on special teams, depending on how O’Brien decides to fill out his special teams units.

Good point about the weight room!!!
But that’s another reason why I think that they’ll spend more time with the Dirty Show before we see them on special teams. Maybe they could see some special team action later in the season. But that’ll depend a lot on how the more experienced guys hold up under the inevitable bumps and bruises.
