The Football Writers Association of America released preseason watch lists for the Outland Trophy and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy on Thursday. A trio of Nittany Lions appear on the lists. Defensive tackle DaQuan Jones, offensive guard John Urschel and defensive end Deion Barnes are all in consideration for the awards.
Jones and Urschel are on the watch list for the Outland Trophy, given to the nation’s top interior lineman. Jones is entering his senior season and will need to be a leader on a Nittany Lions’ defensive line that lost two starters from a year ago. He started 11 games in 2012 and finished with 22 tackles. Urschel is already a leader on the offensive line and considered one of the top linemen in the country. He was named to the All-Big Ten Team last season.
Barnes, who stood out at defensive end during his freshman year, will once again be a top contributor for Penn State on defense. He finds himself on the watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, given to the defensive player of the year. Last year, Barnes made 26 tackles and led the team with six sacks. He was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Barnes is already on the preseason watch list this year for the Chuck Bednarik Award, given to the top defensive player in college football.
Penn State now has five players currently named to award watch lists. Running back Zach Zwinak was named earlier this week to the Maxwell Award preseason watch list, given annually to the best player in college football, and Kyle Carter on the Mackey Award watch list, for the nation’s top tight end.
