It has been just about 3 and a half months since we have seen the Nittany Lions doing much of anything football related. Sure, we’ve had plenty to talk about, but isn’t it more fun to talk about a quarterback battle than Bill O’Brien flirting with the NFL? The 2013 edition of the Penn State football team held their first of 14 practices leading up to April 20th, and the annual Blue White Game on Monday in Holuba Hall. Bill O’Brien started the day meeting the media, which lead into an open practice. Plenty of folks had the festivities covered, and here’s the day’s recap, 140 characters at a time from some of the best on the PSU beat.
Bill O’Brien said he’s excited to be done with “the banquet circuit” and get back to coaching….

I know what he’s saying, but who doesn’t like a good banquet?
O’Brien isn’t one to overly hype guys, but he consistently has good things to say about RB Akeel Lynch.

That makes two of us. I’m pumped to see what Akeel can do this year.
O’Brien says Zach Zwinak will enter the spring as the starting running back but plans to use Belton and Lynch as well.

All 3 bring different things to the table. If everyone is healthy, it will be really interesting to see how it all shakes out.
Bill O’Brien on QB competition: It’s fun when you’re working with the guy you’re working with. #PennState

Bill O’Brien: Christian Hackenberg will “certainly” be in the mix at QB for the fall. #PennState

O’Brien on QBs: I’m not in to alternating quarterbacks. I’m not saying we’ll never do that, but I’m not really into that.
— Drew Balis (@drewBbalis) March 18, 2013
I guess it makes sense to put all these together, and I hope you didn’t find any of them that earth shattering. I still expect Hackenberg to redshirt, unless he’s just that good, or the other guys just aren’t.
O’Brien said TE Kyle Carter (wrist) and S Stephen Obeng-Agyapong (shoulder) won’t have contract in spring
— Bob Flounders (@BobbyFlo7) March 18, 2013
None of that is surprising, but confirming PSU’s limited injuries going into the spring.
Bill O’Brien says two-way player Malik Golden may split time on both sides of the football this spring. Same with lineman Nate Cadogan.
— Kevin McGuire (@KevinOnCFB) March 18, 2013
Bill O’Brien: Garry Gilliam’s move from TE to T has been a really good move based on what he’s done so far adapting. #PennState
— Kevin McGuire (@KevinOnCFB) March 18, 2013
These are the 3 position changes that we have all known about. Interesting to see that Golden and Cadogan will see some time back on the offensive side. Continue on for some notes from practice!
