Returning home to play at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion for the first time since the 5th of this month, the women faced off against Princeton in their second midweek matchup of the season. Unfortunately, they were blanked by the Tigers 3-0 despite some great goaltending by PSU netminder Nicole Paniccia.
The first period saw Princeton take a 1-0 lead with four and a half minutes left off the stick of Karen MacDonald. Shots in this period were almost dead even, with a slight advantage to the Tigers 6-5. From the second frame on; however, Princeton took a commanding 24-14 lead in shots, even having the first 12 shots of the second period. A quick goal just 39 seconds into the second period put the Nittany Lions in a 2-0 hole and the nail in the coffin came about midway through the third when the Tigers went up 3-0. Penn State’s offense generated more chances as the game went on, but could not put any good chances in the back of the net. Shannon Yoxheimer had 8 shots in the game, almost half of the Nittany Lions shot count for the night. Nicole Paniccia had another great game as well in net, saving 27 of Princeton’s 30 shots. The loss against the Tigers drops the Nittany Lion’s record to 7-17-1 this season.
The women will stay at home this weekend to continue their four game home stand with two games against Mercyhurst. The last time these two teams met back at the end of November, the Lakers rolled over the Nittany Lions with 5-0 and 7-1 wins in Erie. Friday’s game will have a 7:00PM start while Saturday’s game will be at 2:00PM. The men will face Ohio in an exhibition series starting on Friday at 7:00PM in Hershey, Pa at the GIANT Center. Saturday’s matchup will be played at home in the Greenberg at 7:30PM. And again, as always, make sure to check me out on Twitter for your Penn State Hockey news!
