Ted Roof Leaves PSU for Georgia Tech

Well, this has been a fun first 9 days of 2013, hasn’t it?  Less than a week after the Bill O’Brien rumors swept up Happy Valley, a coach is leaving Penn State.  Ted Roof abruptly announced his resignation this afternoon to take the defensive coordinator position at Georgia Tech, his alma mater. O’Brien acted quickly, promoting secondary coach John Butler to defensive coordinator.

Roof’s hiring was met with, well we will call it “nervousness” last winter by Nittany Lions fans.  He had recently been fired by Auburn and taken on the coordinator position at Central Florida, before being hired at PSU.  Roof and O’Brien had worked together at Duke, where Roof served as head coach.  The hiring was key to expanding PSU’s recruiting reach into the south, especially Georgia, where Roof has many connections.

Butler’s quick promotion leads me to think this had been in the works for some time, although there are no indications that Roof was being forced out.  There has been some question as to why Butler was promoted over Larry Johnson Sr. or Ron Vanderlinden.  However, both coaches reportedly made it known last winter during the hiring process for O’Briens staff that they were not interested in an expanded role.
