Penn State Women’s Soccer Headed To College Cup

The Penn State women’s soccer team is back where they expect to be.  For the first time since 2005, the Nittany Lions are headed to the College Cup, college soccer’s Final Four, after knocking off Duke 1-0 at Jefferey Field on Friday evening.

Christine Nairn scored the match’s lone goal from the penalty spot in the 14th minute.  Penn State controlled much of the first half, but was unable to tally a second time.  The tables turned in the second half, as the Blue Devils applied seemingly constant pressure to the Lions’ goal, but could not beat Erin McNulty with their 5 shots that challenged her.  For the match, Duke outshot PSU 19-7, and 5-3 on goal.

Penn State will face national top seed Florida State a week from today.  FSU beat Notre Dame earlier Friday by the same 1-0 score.  The other semifinal will feature the winners from North Carolina-BYU and Stanford-UCLA.  This year’s College Cup takes place in San Diego.

Friday’s game will air on ESPNU, with the time to be announced.
