Two Penn State players were honored by the Big 10 with Player of the Week honors for their roles in the Lions’ 38-14 win at Iowa on Saturday night.
Senior defensive tackle Jordan Hill became the third Nittany Lion to college Big 10 Defensive Player of the Week honors, joining teammates Michael Mauti (who has won the award twice this season) and Gerald Hodges. Hill was a force all night along the line for Penn State, racking up 9 total tackles, 2 tackles for loss and 1 sack. Hill lead a defensive effort that held the Hawkeyes to just 23 rushing yards on 20 carries, and 209 yards total.
Freshman tightend Kyle Carter was named Big 10 Freshman of the Week for his 6 catch, 85 yard effort on Saturday. The 6 catches tied a career high, and the 85 yards were a new record. All 6 receptions came in the first half, including a key 4th down reception that Carter jumped and reached over a defender to bring in, and keep the early momentum going for PSU. No word on how well he blocked, however. Carter is the 2nd Penn State freshman to win the award this year, following defensive end Deion Barnes’, who won following the Navy win.
