While both running backs have been discussed here, VBR just recently learned that both Wes Bullock of Florida and Roman Clay of Lancaster, PA will be in attendance for the Ohio State game on October 27th.
Wes Bullock is a smaller, shifty back from the Tampa area who was offered a scholarship in late September. He is very high on Penn State but holds offers from Western Kentucky, Florida Atlantic, Bowling Green and Toledo, who he also has high on his list. The 5’7″ 155 pound scatback rushed for 1308 yards on 179 carries in 2011. He also had 403 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. In all, Wes averaged over 8 yards per touch as a junior. He was a part of the team who won the 8A state championship last year. Ted Roof was in to visit Bullock just last week.
Somewhat on the other end of the spectrum by both location and style, in-state Roman Clay is a feature-back type of player. He tells me that he has been visited by a Penn State coach on a weekly basis for some time now and running back coach Charles London made it to one of his recent games. He had nearly 1900 yards and 32 touchdowns in 2011 on just 184 carries. That’s an average of one touchdown every 5.75 carries. He turned heads earlier this year with a 442 yard, 6 touchdown performance on just 22 carries. He jumped onto the radars of schools across the nation, but also onto the radars of opposing defenses, who have put their maximum effort into slowing Clay down. He has offers from Kent State and Delaware, both of whom have hosted Clay in the past month, as well as UMass and Towson.
In my opinion, these are two of the best running backs on Penn State’s radar right now and there is a good chance that one of them will be in the 2013 recruiting class. The Nittany Lions have shown interest in smaller, versatile running backs lately which is where Bullock fits in. Clay reminds me of a Shonn Greene-type back and may very well have a better college career, but might not be the right fit for Penn State, who returns Zach Zwinak and Akeel Lynch next year. However, the staff is certainly paying him quite a bit of attention.
It’ll be interesting to see how next Saturday plays out. Will Clay get his offer? Will Bullock be overwhelmed by Beaver Stadium and commit before heading back to Florida? Penn State fans should be happy to reel in either of these two.
