Greetings fellow CFB fans. This is a new blog where each week after the AP and Coaches Polls have been released, I will be taking a look at a couple of teams that I feel are either too high, or too low.
Before we begin, I would like to put out this disclaimer: I am not a fan of college football polls until week 8, the first week of the BCS rankings. Early season polls exist to give fans something to talk about around the water cooler at work. We all know that the polls are going to change significantly by week 8. Who can possibly say that one team is the best team in football, right now; its all conjecture and hubris. No one has even played a game! The major polls can’t even agree. The AP Poll has USC as its #1 team while the USA Today Coaches Poll has LSU as its #1. So, before we rush to judgement, lets let some of the games be played on the field before we say who should be #1, OK?
Alright, with that out of the way, why don’t we examine who the writers and coaches have put in polls that I feel are too high for Week #1.
Michigan Wolverines (#8 – AP / USA Today Polls). Right out of the box, the Wolverines have a chance to prove me wrong, as they play Alabama in their first game of the year. This team features Heisman-contender Denard Robinson and other offensive talent like Fitz Toussaint, Roy Roundtree and Jeremy Gallon. Their defense also made a big turnaround last season. They were ranked 17th in total team defense last season, and they return 7 players from that squad.
While I see Michigan battling Michigan State and Nebraska for supremacy of the Legends Division of the Big Ten when its all said and done, I can see them struggling with some of the teams on their schedule. Michigan has big games against Alabama (neutral site), at Notre Dame, Michigan State, and at Ohio State. That’s brutal! If they do manage to win most of those games, rest assured they will be a Top-10 team come seasons end.
Where should they be ranked? I would have this team ranked about #12 or #13
