News came out on Sunday afternoon that Rob Bolden would be visiting LSU, with a potential transfer in mind. Later, it was revealed that Bolden was no longer on the official Penn State roster. Penn State admitted that he was no longer on the team.
While it’s not the most shocking news that Penn State fans have dealt with in July, it’s still significant as Matt McGloin is now the only quarterback on Penn State’s roster who had taken a meaningful snap.
Despite having played in 20 games as a freshman and sophomore, Bolden found himself 3rd on the depth chart at the conclusion of spring practice. A transfer seemed quite possible even before the sanctions were levied, opening the gate for players to leave without losing a year of eligibility.
Many question the interest of a program like LSU in a 3rd strong quarterback, but Bolden was highly recruited out of high school and did show some flashes early in his career.
As is the case with any player who leaves, I wish Rob luck. I’m not familiar with the LSU depth chart but people tell me they are in need of depth. A common theme seems to be that they believe they are getting a guy who is a threat as a running quarterback. We shall see.
