In what feels like the most predictable news Penn Starters have dealt with in the last 9 months, the first decommitment has hit the 2013 recruiting class.
The bad news comes by way of DT Greg Webb who, while visiting North Carolina this weekend, has now given the tarheels his verbal pledge.
In the wake of the Freeh Report, many are expecting NCAA sanctions to follow at Penn State. That’s plenty of ammo for competing coaches when it comes to recruiting.
It’s also notable that Greg’s friend and high school teammate DE DaJaun Drennon committed to UNC today. Greg was not offered a scholarship to Penn State, as they told him they were full at the position.
Greg is a four star DT out of New Jersey who is rated as a top ten player at his position.
The big question is whether or not Greg will be the last to jump ship. Some recruits have said that they are remaining fully committed while some are quietly taking visits to other schools. In fairness, these kids deserve to research their options with the future of Penn State football foggy, at best.
Make sure to check out this week’s recruiting update where I’ll name a few potential DTs that the coaching staff might reach out to. Keep in mind that the staff was perfectly comfortable taking just one player at Gregs position this year which would indicate that they don’t view defensive tackle as a huge position of need.
UNC got themselves a fine player and this is a good reminder to PSU fans that verbal commitments should be celebrated cautiously.
